Re: Let's settle this once and for all....

I'd be interested to know if people still stick with their (mostly wrong :P ) choices in games that don't use up/down such as most platformers and space invaders. In that case I prefer QW with P. If a game just needs left/right/fire, I'd probably stick with something like (right hand) O = left, P =...

Re: Why is there only one fire button ?

Spinner for bat and ball games Did anyone find it easy to use arcade spinner-type controls? I remember seeing rotators/balls for some arcade games (like Arkanoid, and I think Tron had one too). I was absolutely hopeless at using them. They felt like very unfamiliar controls for someone used to joys...

I think it's do-able, but from what I remember, it's easy to scupper yourself and make it impossible to finish if you block a corridor/exit with debris from an enemy vehicle.

I'm guessing the original recording was done secretly to recruit for MI6.

Re: Scrolling effect on Nebulus

That Mickey Mouse video was interesting, though I guess the Nebulus tiles have been made a bit more regular shaped (I guess for different tiles?). The Mickey game platform has struts which complicates things slightly. In Nebulus the platforms seem to be pretty regular until they reach the edge of th...

Re: Key preferences - am I the only one who doesn't like QAOP?

I started using cursor keys, possibly because I'd got used to them from the ZX81, and some early Speccy games let you use them Afterwards started getting used to QZIP (Horace games maybe). My fire button of choice was 'B' (!) but I switched to N soon after After a short time I switched to QAOP (less...

Scrolling effect on Nebulus

Nebulus (Hewson) I'm a bit crap at this game, but have always been intrigued by the pseudo-scrolling effect. It really makes the tower seem cylindrical. It's interesting to watch the behaviour of the platforms as they wrap behind tower. https://i.imgur.com/O1EAjew.gif Anyone know how it's done? I'm...

Re: More than 2 screenshots?

Yep, it's been suggested before and you can submit multiple ones. I'd imagine Spectrum Computing and most other sites using the same source are set up to show just one screen in search results (which kind of makes sense). I reckon it'd be good for some games - one example is Eureka! , whose entry cu...

Target Renegade is one game that I've heard a lot of people say is mismatched with the mournful and slow dirge of the AY tune. I don't think it's that bad though.

I remember someone posting about looking for a bunch of Icelandic Speccy games years ago (on WoS or here), so I guess there were others.

I'm sure there are a few Icelandic spec-chums around that can confirm :)

Re: Games with procedural worlds and AI-like characters?

Oh, it's a BASIC program! You can hack it at will!! I think it uses a few machine code routines for bits like the graphics/scrolling parts. You have to treat it like an adventure game, e.g. GO EAST to get to an adjacent room. The movement that follows is a bit like a cut-scene until you get there...

Re: Best version of Scramble on the Speccy?

I reckon Penetrator's the best I've played, despite the ridiculous fire/forward key combo. Along with the Hobbit, I reckon Megler & Mitchell were right up there programming-wise for such an early time in the Speccy's life. I had the original of Cavern Fighter and played it a lot. The only thing ...
