Re: Should game reviews mark down games for being unoriginal?

Head Over Heels is an interesting debate - I personally wouldn't have rated it anywhere nearly as highly as Crash did. I agree with you. Well, I will rate HoH very highly due to its technical execution - it's big, has lots of rooms and creatures and innovative gameplay ... but I just never enjoyed ...

Re: decolourizing games

Some of Chris Kerry's games would look better with a lot less colour, and some shading/details instead. Agree, I've applied the "less colour" idea to Jack and the Beanstalk, but I'm confident that it'll work perfectly for Monty is Innocent, Giant's Revenge and most of his other games too ...

Re: Spectrum Graphics Editor

Many years ago, I released a utility called Spectrum Graphics Editor for viewing and editing graphics in Speccy snapshot files. It's still available on the old Retrospec site, but it doesn't play nice with modern versions of Windows... I still use it. Sure it could use a bit of an improvement, but ...

Re: The Story Of Sir Lancelot

Nice interview. I was writing with Stephen Cargill (probably) about 15 years ago, with the intention to get an interview with him into Retro Gamer Magazine, but as far as I remember - although he said "yes" he never really seemed that interested, so I never pushed the agenda further. But i...

He just won a guy with 1700 international ELO. So, what you're saying, is that he won a grown up person that he can take home with him? Can this person function as a slave, or will he only be available for playing chess? ... and since his father is okay with it, how does his mum feel about that? :l...

Re: Homebrew developers: a couple of questions, this goes hypothetical

I would say probably Dingo . I was my first game for the Speccy and I really enjoyed re-learning Z80 and slowly (but surely) getting things working better and better. Back in the day it would obviously have to be released under the Ultimate brand and around the time of their 16K games ... and I'm su...

There is also a really good version on the C64 that I play (emulated) from time to time.

Another "Name that game" thread.

I also posted this on WoS earlier today, but that hasn't given me the right answer yet, so I'll try here too. I've been meaning to play this platform game again, but I can't seem to remember its damn name. I can't remember much, but here's what I think I remember. Usually when I see a picture of it,...

Re: Homebrew coin-op conversions that were never tackled commercially

I've always loved Dingo, released for the arcades by Ultimate ( before the Spectrum years, IIRC). Converted by Tardis Remakes: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/27162/ZX-Spectrum/Dingo https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/SCRtoImage.php?SCR=/conv_scr/d/Dingo.scr&border=0 Thank you, I'm happy, th...

Re: How did you learn assembly in the 80s?

I began learning Z80 in the mid 80's by hacking and cracking games. Slowly and slowly I learned more, but for a really long time I really only used that knowledge to code tools to help me hack and crack other games. It wasn't until 2011 I really started coding in assembler (Dingo).

Shadow screen at 49152

Re: is there a way of reading registers from basic?

I don't see the use or the point of the original question. If you're in Basic then registers and flags will change tens-of-thousands times a second as Basic is running (the program counter will change up to 70.000 times a second alone). There is absolutely no reason to even think about reading the r...

It could be leveldata, which could give it a repeatable structure, but be much harder to identify than code or graphics.

With those keys I would suggest P or SPACE, but I really hope you'll have a 'Redefine Keys' options, because I would not enjoy using the WASD keys.

While you may not use any ROM routines in your code, the interrupt will still be running and that might affect the Sys Vars that are placed not much below 24000. To be absolutely sure that you can use the Sys Var area for your own purposes, you should either have interrupts disabled ALL the time OR ...

Re: Which ZX Spectrum game is most deserving of a sequel?

The question/idea doesn't really specify if this remake would be for the Spectrum or a more modern platform ... but I assume it would be the former. I would've loved to see Costa Panayi make an Android 3 game. Something more solid and not ATTR based - like some of his later games. It could have a mo...
