Re: Bullet Spray routines

If you want to have a bullet flying from any point to another point then you will in most cases need the old, good Bresenham algorithm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bresenham%27s_line_algorithm Drawing a flying bullet is almost the same as drawing a line, you just don't clear the old positions in ca...

Re: Gra Hacker

It's a graphic utility allowing to search for sprites in Spectrum memory. It's similar to options built into some modern emulators, just more limited and akward ;) The title is weird. "Gra" means "game" in Polish. So would the title mean something like "Hacker game" in ...

Re: Physics puzzles games

I might be stretching the definition a bit too much. The player walks, jumps and falls. The goal of the game is to solve puzzles by doing these actions at the right time in the right places. Yes, you are. Calling Manic Miner a puzzle game is too much for me ;) But I get what you mean. You are inter...

Re: Secrets of Castle Madness - Grid based dungeon crawler

I suppose the truth is somewhere in-between here ;) Yes, you can use labels (and comments) in native Spectrum assemblers but they use up memory very quickly. Assembler code always takes much more memory than compiled machine code,so if you want to make a game occupying all Spectrum memory then you h...

Original Wordle checks if the word that you entered is correct.
So it involves keeping a big dictionary of words.

Here you can type anything.
It's not better or worse. It's just a slightly different game, requiring a different strategy.

Yes, colour clash may be a problem here but Cannon Bubble manages to deal with it.

Speaking of similar games, nobody did Zuma for Spectrum, probably exactly due to problems with colour clash.

Re: XT-Engine: small, but powerful platform game engine in asm

As long as you are having fun with it, it's okay. My experience is that guys who mess too much with tools never deliver the final product. I remember a guy who wrote a code on some archaic assembler from 1980s running on Pc running Dos and connected to a real Spectrum for testing. And I remember a g...

Re: RetroTINK recreates the beauty of CRT displays for serious and seriously deep-pocketed retrogamers

It's a weird thing with these CRT blurred displays. We used it in the past because there was nothing better. When technology allowed clear LCD displays everybody switched to it. Today, even on retroparties, most people use modern TVs or monitors. In emulation, while many emulators allow blurred mode...

And when it's a hobby, the pressure of people's expectations because they've put money in a pot starts to make the whole thing feel more like work... Exactly. And when you fail to deliver what they expect, they can become really toxic. Remember the Vega saga? The guys who promised Vega to the backe...

Re: Gamesradar selection of top 10 Spectrum 128k games

They call it "The all-time best Spectrum 128k games " yet they didn't include any single game made after commercial era.

I really dislike when some guys believe that Zx Spectrum history ended in 1992 or so.

Comparing Satan to Sqij'd doesn't feel right for me. They are different types of games. Would you compare Hungry Horace to Robocop? And Satan is a good game indeed. I believe it's a clone of a game called Black Tiger which we also have on Spectrum: https://www.mobygames.com/game/15075/black-tiger/ h...

Wow, it's a beatemup game! Such attempts are quite rare and always earn my respect.

To be honest, it's a bad. And probably could be made better really cheaply - custom font, some better background graphics,
flicker reduction.

But it still has my respect :)

Re: Games with huge maps?

Of course whenever people write that "someone" should do this and that, this "someone" will usually never materialize (and why should they) so it is always a bit futile.
"Someone" is a cool guy, he never protests if we say that he should do something ;)

Re: Games with huge maps?

How do you even play that game? The map is riddled with dead-ends I suppose that you refer to Paris-Dakar. I completed it once and you can check my recording at Rzx Archive. Actually the generated map is much bigger than the route you have to travel, it generates much more than needed. When you sta...

Paris-Dakar has huge auto-generated maps:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/3 ... aris-Dakar

Check Pavero site with example maps, they are 16384x16384 pixels which gives us 64x85=5440 Spectrum screens :o

Re: BLAM! - *RE-RELEASED* ZX Spectrum 48K and 128K game from 1992!

I remember this game, it has been found a few years ago.

I made a rzx recording of it once:
https://www.rzxarchive.co.uk/videos/blam.php

So what does "re=released" means here? Was it altered in any way? Did it get a "proper" cassette release?

Re: XT-Engine: small, but powerful platform game engine in asm

My feeling is that too much steam is going into the whistle in this thread. It really doesn't matter if something compiles in half a second, one second or three seconds. By the way, do I understand correcly that game compiler running in Forth runs on actual Zx Spectrum? Personally I would go 100% cr...
