Re: An impressive way to crash the Speccy?
You might get some interesting effects by messing around with the I and R registers, for example setting I to point to contended memory.
I think Tomahawk also has some screen corruption effects for when you crash.

Nice, that was interesting. The part about having a hardware addon in the ZX81 to override a memory access and fix a ROM bug sounds pretty crazy.

Re: Standard ROM entrypoints?
I don't think the 48K ROM really changed that much, but the Interface 1 ROM at least had a lot of routines shuffled around between versions. This article has a brief summary: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~jg27p ... r18_27.htm

Re: Help identifying spectrum hand coded games
That's pretty neat - though you have a couple of errors. You have two line 160s, and you're not doing hidden surface removal as in the original - though that would slow things down a lot more on the Speccy. Whoops! Well that makes more sense now - it looks like GMODE 2 is basically like INVERSE 1 a...

Re: Help identifying spectrum hand coded games
Nice looking images stformatjez. Were they ever in colour originally? Maybe we could even start a colouring competition thread here. ;) Sorry if I'm hijacking your thread, but I've had this small BASIC listing lying around for a while and I'd forgotten where it was from. I was goi...

Re: Help identifying spectrum hand coded games
I didn't manage to find what the other ones are, but I found two games that look kind of similar. Maybe they'll at least jog a memory or something. Here's another one, from the same book, Computer Games:
Sorcerer's Steps
The others must be from some other book though.

Is it time for the Friday quiz thread already?
I managed to find one of them: Alien Invaders
I'll keep looking to see if I can identify the others.

Alessandro You don't need to use DOSBox to run RealSpectrum any more, there's a version I use that runs on modern Windows. I think this site is where I got it from.

Just given Mindstone a go and it seems quite good. It looks nice and the control scheme isn't too bad either.

Bug with special characters in titles
If you search for certain games with the character '+' in them, you get an error like the following in the results page, seemingly related to invalid characters in filenames: Warning: getimagesize(pub/sinclair/screens/load/b/scr/Buzzsaw%2B(FoxtonLocksMix).scr): failed to open stream: No such file or...

Re: Musical tape loaders
I found a thread on W*S about this loader: https://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/discussion/22295
It's a shame about the dead source code link. No one happens to have a copy of the source (musical_source.zip) do they?

Also Surfchamp is one game that might not have worked on the Spectrum+, due to requiring a surfboard keyboard overlay designed for the rubber key model.

Re: AY sound chip: mono or stereo?
I wasn't really hoping for any specific result, although I admit I am a bit surprised that no one here uses stereo at all. I just made the poll to find out what people use and see if there's any point in doing games with stereo sound. Looks like I got my answer.

Re: AY sound chip: mono or stereo?
Heh, well this poll turned out even more skewed than the Manic Miner one did. Strictly mono for me. The AY chip was not meant to be a stereophonic sound source; channels were meant to be mixed together internally, much like they are mixed down in analog synthesizes. I think it's going a bit far to s...

AY sound chip: mono or stereo?
When you're listening to AY music or playing games with AY sound, what do you use, mono or stereo? The original 128K machines as released by Sinclair and Amstrad were of course mono, but stereo hardware mods are common and most emulators have a stereo sound option. By 'hard-panned stereo', I mean th...
