Well the DIY kit is just 75€, I mounted it by myself and it's very easy. And then you will have a full Linux distribution (retropie recommended) About Nintendo DS... well, to install ZXDS you need a Flash Cart as ZXDS is not supported legally on the DS.... On Rpi1 and 2, the sdl audio driver seems the best choice.
But on rpi3, seems pulse to work better

60x44 nirvana? why you need nirvana to do that?

You can do 64x48 without any scanline "tricks". It's like the zx81 "graphic" standard mode + paper + ink
