When you mentioned the Kempston mouse, I immediately thought of what was accomplished by Velesoft a few years ago with the new Kempston Mouse interface and all the games that were modified (by him) to work with it. Some emulators support it as well.
edit: I see you covered Velesoft's page. It's been a few years, but I think I tried a modern mouse with a usb-to-ps2 adapter and it worked. It wasn't slow at all.

Awww, maaan, I remember playing that golf game, and quite enjoying it despite it being in BASIC. It would have made a good type in.
I can't for the life of me figure out where I would have got it, because I didn't own it, so I guess it must have been an *ahem* unauthorised copy from somewhere...
