SC Retro
Re: SC Retro
This is the perfect solution!
Now I'm just wondering, how to keep this display as default in every search?

Re: SC Retro
Sorry, guys, I'm again with my "let's make title a little more visible and clean" )
How about removing <hr> tag at the top of the page (we don't need it), increase size of title to <font size="+3"> and make top+bottom margin like 10px?
Just add to <table> tag this:
style="margin: 10px 0"
It should look okay:
Also I kinda think that you don't need bold and italic font in all table's headers (for example Main File Downloads). You can make Filename, Release etc only bold, but change color a little bit. For example, to #888888 or maybe #999999.

Re: SC Retro
My apologies for the late replies. I just spent the last few days optimizing the site even further. Everything should work a lot faster now, for both primary and alternate layouts.
We now return to our regular programming...

I'm currently discussing a few ideas with Peter and Ricardo. Perhaps cookies to remember each user's preference? Suggestions are welcome!

Done, thanks!michellekg wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 2:16 amHow about removing <hr> tag at the top of the page (we don't need it), increase size of title to <font size="+3"> and make top+bottom margin like 10px?
I don't think it works when files are not available for download, for instance:michellekg wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 2:16 amAlso I kinda think that you don't need bold and italic font in all table's headers (for example Main File Downloads). But I agree that bold italic stands out too much. What about italic underline?
Re: SC Retro
Well, I don't know how best to solve it from a technical point of view, but I would just like to make one small remark regarding this compact version.Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:04 pmI'm currently discussing a few ideas with Peter and Ricardo. I think the size of the games title is now too big, disproportionate to the rest of the page.
The previous size seemed ideal to me, this one now seems inconsistent and unpleasant to watch...

Re: SC Retro
I don't think the title looks too big now. But it's probably because of the SC logo that's even bigger.
I think you are right. When we reduce the logo size in this version, we will probably need to reduce the title too.

Yeah, I think that's kinda nice. It's better then my suggestion!Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:29 pm But I agree that bold italic stands out too much. What about italic underline?
Re: SC Retro
Same here on Chrome. The "issue" column for magazines displays one row too high.
Re: SC Retro
That's a no from me. The original was just fine, though I agree that italics are not needed anywhere.Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:29 pmDone, thanks!michellekg wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 2:16 amHow about removing <hr> tag at the top of the page (we don't need it), increase size of title to <font size="+3"> and make top+bottom margin like 10px?

Underline means clickable, and they ain't.
How about a note in the main file downloads that specifies (or links to information) as to why they're not available?

I tried both Chrome and Safari in Windows and MacOS, but I could not reproduce this problem.
Perhaps someone with better layout knowledge could please take a look and let me know how to make the proper adjusts?

Re: SC Retro
Any other ideas?
Yes, I still need to add some copyright notice similar to the main layout. It will also work as an explanation when files are not available.
That's another reason this alternate layout is not "official" (available from homepage) yet...
Re: SC Retro
Keep things consistent. Ditch Italics, as they look terrible everywhere except inside actual text for emphasis. Use the same bold/black text as you currently do (in compact mode) for the additional file downloads. These are headings and they should look the same as all the other headings. No need for other colours, it's plainly obvious from their indentation that they belong to their respective sections.
Other than that, it looks bloody great. No wasted space (except for bugs in the layout such as for this one: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/compact/1196 - "Inspiration for"), space being the one of the two main problems with WoS right now (the other being that it doesn't show all info by default, which your compact view does nicely).
Re: SC Retro
I have the same issue at smaller display widths. It seems to be caused by a leftover from the main site:Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 6:55 amI tried both Chrome and Safari in Windows and MacOS, but I could not reproduce this problem.

Thank you Einar Saukas.
Huge appreciation and respect for all of your work and the results of it. No one person did as much good for the Speccy scene since Martijn discovered females - IMO
Re: SC Retro
LOL, goddamn females and their wiley ways...
p.s. what are they ?
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

Re: SC Retro
Now the last link at the bottom of each game page points back to the same page within Spectrum Computing, except it switches between PRIMARY VIEW and COMPACT VIEW.
Once you switch to COMPACT VIEW, every page link will continue to show all information in COMPACT VIEW too. I still need to finish top bar and advanced search, but everything else seems to work just fine. Please give it a try:

Re: SC Retro
I'm not quite sure what's happening here. In a fresh web browser, with no SC cookie, I go to this link:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/x-list?label_id=10508
which is the Ocean Software page. Towards the bottom, in the "Associated titles" section I clicked the "100% Dynamite" link:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/alt/111 ... %_Dynamite
which gives me an HTTP bad request error.
That 100%_Dynamite link is the /alt/ one, which is odd. Why is it linking there?
The bottom link on the page is "Battle Stations" which takes me here:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/alt/123 ... e_Stations
which the server delivers correctly. It's still the /alt/ one though (and renders in compact form). Is that expected?
Opening a new tab in the same web browser (Chrome on LInux), going to SC and looking for "Jet Pac" in the search, the link takes me here:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/35942/ZX81/JetPac
which is as expected.
While proof reading this post in "Preview", I clicked the "100% Dynamite" link in the text above and it loaded correctly. But going back to the Ocean page and clicking from there gives the HTTP error. All a bit odd, but I'm supposed to be working and can't investigate further.

The link you posted is the COMPACT VIEW version of this link:dfzx wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 9:08 amIn a fresh web browser, with no SC cookie, I go to this link:

Re: SC Retro
Are there any plans to make this more intuitive? I understand you may have needed a workaround initially, but it would be much better with a clearly visible toggle button. The current layout makes this feature almost invisible.Einar Saukas wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 2:17 am Now the last link at the bottom of each game page points back to the same page within Spectrum Computing, except it switches between PRIMARY VIEW and COMPACT VIEW.

Re: SC Retro
I agree this layout needs more work. However I cannot make changes related to cookies without PeterJ but he's way too busy at this time of year. Also I'm depending on 4thRock for layout improvements but he's currently on vacation...
I suppose next step would be fixing the header. I have in mind a minimalist layout, perhaps just the small SC logo on the left, quick search input on the right, and a row of smaller buttons below (including "DONATIONS" and "SWITCH LAYOUT". Or perhaps a drop-down menu instead of buttons to save even more space?
Problem is, I have zero experience with layout design and not much available time. But if anyone else is willing to provide the HTML, I will gladly make it work!
