The curious case of Ocean: They made both the unnofficial version (1983) and the official one (1986)... which one do you prefer, which has better gameplay?
Stuart Campbell just posted a request on WoS for a hack of Donkey Kong with better coloured sprites. They managed to do it, but unfortunately the download link seems to have gone.
Does anyone have a copy of the 128k version of the hacked game?
Donkey Kong might not be among Ocean's top Spectrum coin-op conversions, but... Kong is a steaming pile of monkey waste, appalling even for 1983 standards
The official Donkey Kong is much nicer to look at, but it seems more unfair - certainly compared to the arcade game - when avoiding the barrels.
The music and sound FX also seem very slow, despite the game itself playing quite fast, making it sound like the person making the music was drunk at the time!
My first instinct was similar to many: WTF?! Easy! But I'd better remind myself of Kong before I vote (for DK).

Ach mein Gott, are you joking, or what?

That's a great thing about this forum, people like Ale can be quoting Goethe one minute, and talking of monkey-dung the next!

I made the TAP and TZX (with Mick Farrow's beautiful loading screen).
If you are modding 1986 version then you should really retouch the sprites. Mario sprite is actually inverted there.
He was drawn to be displayed black on white but is displayed white on black.
Eh?! What have you guys been drinking?! Why is Kong winning?
I just had a bash at both, and my memory wasn't failing me. IMO Donkey Kong looks better, plays better, sounds better, has some nice touches from the original—like the oil barrel and neat little spot effects. It's a pretty decent conversion... if it was mid-late 1984.
That's not to say that Kong is without charm. I quite like its craziness, but I wouldn't compare the two!

Kong is probably worse, but I preferred it, so voted for it..
Something similar here. I played Kong first, so there's a nostalgia component, but maybe another reason is the great dissapointment of the official version, supposed to be much better.

Kong was my first Speccy game ever at Xmas 83, so gets my vote purely on that.
Kong was also one of the first games I played on my brand new 48K around June 1984. I haven't touched it again ever since, and will never do, not even while wearing a hazmat suit

No, no, it's just a true colours mod, but I didn't make it, I just made tape versions. Redrawing the sprites is not included in the plans.
they were:
true color idea, design: Rev_Stuart_Campbell
modding: Pgyuri
new loading screen: Mick Farrow
Ok, I've now updated the graphics for the level 4 baddies, Pauline and Mario's climbing & jumping animations. Just the walking and hammer animation to go!
