Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
The Way of the Exploding Fist for me. Great graphics and one of the best fight games.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
I'm going to think about this one for a bit rather than voting immediately like I normally do. I want to go for Wizball (yes, I really enjoyed it) but there's Exploding Fist, which took games to another level; WTHAS, which is a remarkably original and fun game. Plus others which were damn fine games.
Would this be the appropriate time to mention I have never played Where Time Stood Still? Not back in the day and never in an emulator (that I can remember anyway). Always felt I'd missed out on something, but, then again, I always thought Great Escape was overrated.

Big fight among WEC Le Mans, Fist, Where Time Stood Still, Wizball.
But it's WEC for me.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
I thought I had decided, but now the screenshots have jogged my memory I'm not sure.
It'll have to be between:
When Time Stood Still, WoTExploding Fist, Werewolves of London - general quality
Wheelie - simple oldschool fun
The Wild Bunch - best BASIC game for the speccy full stop?
Worse things happen at sea for originality
...don't know yet.

Yes, but as it's not being disrespectful to Manic Miner then no action will be taken.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
I decided to vote for Where Time Stood Still. One of my all time favourites which I play the most out of the games listed. Besides, what other game lets you lure a T-Rex into a village of unsuspecting natives.
For the record, I also considered Way Of The Exploding Fist, Wanted: Monty Mole, Wriggler and Werewolves Of London.
WTSS does has a slightly unfair advantage over the other games listed though, as being 128K only allows it to be more involved, maybe sometime in the coming months there could a pole of the best 128K only games?

I had to go for Wanted: Monty Mole.
I can still remember the furore at our local club when somebody turned up with it. The stiflingly hot school hall was awash with poorly dressed pre pubescent boys scrambling around to try and get a copy before they were picked up to go back home. All you could hear was the constant clicking of tape player doors opening and closing whilst hi-tec silvers shadows squeaked constantly on the highly polished wooden flooring. Happy days indeed

I’ma go with A Whole New Ball Game. Because reasons. And Pete Cooke.

Went for Way of the Exploding Fist, although I'm still undecided that I should have gone for Wizball...

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
i must admit that I thought Wizball would have got far more votes. I know it's early days in the vote, but, just 1 vote is quite a surprise.
I was a fan when I had the game, but, I never got any further than the second level.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
OK, well I thought about it a while. After a couple of rounds of shortlisting, I got it down to these, based on a subset of games I'd always be happy to immediately load up and play
Wanted: Monty Mole
Way of the Exploding Fist
West Bank
Where Time Stood Still
Wizball
World Series Baseball
After further reflection I've gone for Wanted: Monty Mole. Surprisingly, it has more annoyances and quirks than the others, such as the random crushers and irritating death routine. But for me it's one of the classic Speccy platformers, simple but enjoyable to play, and a nice nostalgia trip with its ironic nods to the UK political climate of the 80s.

You've got me thinking now - it wouldn't feel right to have an A-Z that doesn't have a Monty Mole game in it. I might have to factor that into my choice.Morkin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 11:41 pm After further reflection I've gone for Wanted: Monty Mole. Edit - though it doesn't look like it has a chance now.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
And I want to say that Who Dares Wins II is a very good Commando-like game.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
Bloody good selection of games but the Maggoty Marathon is head and shoulders* above the rest. No contest really.
*do they have shoulders?

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with W: vote
What The absolute F?!?!??!?!? I didn't vote for it myself as I wanted to give Wanted:Monty Mole at least 1 vote as I was fully expecting all other votes to go to the sublime beauty of William Wobbler.
I think many people who played it missed the subtle nuances of the game to be honest. It was clearly a portrayal of life in the 80's represented in pixel form, depicting the struggle with unemployment, inner city deprivation, political upheaval and race wars. It's the only game I've played that has grasped that era so brilliantly.
Oh who am I kidding, it's utter b011ox!!!!

Did I already say that
I like William Wobbler.
