There really isn't. No one from Rare has ever come forward and and said anything of the sort.

Erm, but they did? Perhaps I'm missing something, but the cover art is out there, and Tim said that they produced a few sketches and ideas. To clarify, I'm not talking about actual code, so perhaps I'm stretching a bit the interpretation of "early development".
