A really good selection this time.
The 'adventure factor' unbalanced my vote so:
1 - Carlos Michelis
2 - Castlevania
3 - La Corona Encantada

I do love to torture myself with a bit of Crimbo and its woefully unfair collision detection, but my vote has to be for the staggeringly good opponent A.I. programming that's gone into Complica DX. That's a real achievement of 8-bit programming.

Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
Thank you!!! Frankly I never expected anyone to appreciate that!
Personally I'm still trying to decide my vote. There are too many games I really like, and I'm resisting the temptation to vote for my own game.
Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
I voted for The Charm. Just because I really enjoyed playing it.

Not easy. Again I've had to decide how much to factor in sheer enjoyment over technical achievement.
As impressive as Castlevania and Complica DX (sorry Einar!) are, this is my top 3:
Catacombs Of Balachor
Circuitry
Crimbo
So Catacombs gets my vote (Circuitry came very close, but I decided it was too difficult).
I'm not completely sure why, but it epitomises exactly what I want a Spectrum game to be.

My vote goes to Carlos Michelis for Frank Trigg's tantalizing theme tune.

I've only played Castlevania and Dizzy out this list and you have to admit that that Castlevania is one hell of an achievement and a brilliant game. That's what get's my vote.
Also, there are some superb loading screens in this list as well.

Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
I appreciate Castlevania is quite an achievement, but frankly I find it very dull to play. It takes an age to get anywhere and then you find you have to backtrack and do the same bit again several times, in-between bouts of properly dreadful dialogue. It might be comparable to something on the NES but that's not really a big deal to aim for.
Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
Cheril Perils is the one I've played the most.
Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
Castlevania got my vote in the end although it was a close call between that and Complica DX, which is one of the most addictive games I've ever played.

Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
I voted for Castlevania. I remember when it originally came out and I was blown away by the level of quality. The graphics are some of the nicest I've seen in any Spectrum game, and the music is fantastic too. In fact this game directly inspired my interest in the AY with its downloadable soundtrack.
It may start off a little slow, but the game gets more interesting once you start getting upgrades and weapons. The movement upgrades and the teleportation ability let you move around much faster, which saves a lot of time backtracking. And the dialogue doesn't really bother me. I actually like the slightly unusual English translation, as it adds some charm to the game.
For me the main downside of Castlevania is the slightly anticlimactic ending (the bad ending more than the intended one). The bosses are also a little too easy to beat on subsequent playthroughs, once you know which strategies to use.
As a bonus, the game makes good use of systems with faster clock speeds. Try playing it on a 7MHz CPU and the sprite movement becomes silky smooth.

Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
Well, what can I say?
Castlevania: Spectral Interlude is the clear winner, scoring 8 votes, twice as many as the second-placed title.
That second-placed title being Carlos Michelis - 4 votes.
Third place is the 2017 128K-only remake of Crystal Kingdom Dizzy from an international team of coders - 3 votes.
Fourth place, with 2 votes, is Complica DX.
One vote each ensures that these games are placed fifth - Captain Drexx; Catacombs Of Balachor; Celtic Carnage; The Charm; Cheril Perils; La Corona Encantada; Cray 5; Crimbo and Cybereal.
Now, some of you came up with a proportional vote - the first time this has happened in a modern Speccy game A-Z poll. I've done the calculations on the back of a fag packet and Castlevania also tops that, with Carlos Michelis similarly placed second (albeit jointly)...
7 Castlevania - Spectral Interlude
3 Carlos Michelis
3 Catacombs Of Balachor
3 Complica DX
4 Crystal Kingdom Dizzy 2017
2 Circuitry
1 La Corona Encantada
1 Crimbo

Re: The best modern Speccy game beginning with C: vote
I don't know if that's true but I love it! Castlevania gets the top spot in both, and although I didn't vote for it due to quirks of taste, it seems fair enough to me.PeteProdge wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2019 10:43 am Now, some of you came up with a proportional vote - the first time this has happened in a modern Speccy game A-Z poll.
