"Golden Shoe" by Ocean?

Post by toot_toot »

I was flicking through the Ocean 1988/1989 catalogue and on the last two pages are a listing of the upcoming games from Ocean.

https://ia800604.us.archive.org/view_ar ... 988-89.pdf

Although it's not mentioned anywhere else in the catalogue, there's a listing for a game called "Golden Show" with it being available on the Spectrum, Amstrad and Commodore 64.

There were games in previous Ocean catalogues that never saw the light of day under the Ocean label, like Flashpoint, Quondam and Phantis, but those were eventually released under a different label or as magazine cover tape games.

But I had never heard of "Golden Shoe" and it seems to have been never actually released. So it made me think, what is "Golden Shoe"?

The only thing I can think of is that it maybe had something to do with the "European Golden Shoe" for the leading football goalscorer. I first thought "maybe it was the original name for Match Day II", but that was released in 1987.

I searched for Ocean and release date 1988 and this came up, Emilio Butragueno Futbol, published by Ocean and Toposoft in 1988.

I believe this is a bit of an odd game, it's one of only two games "published" by Ocean in Spain, the other being Emilio Butragueno Futbol 2 which is actually a compilation of two Gary Linekar games.

I've never played Emilio Butragueno Futbol but it looks like the reviews weren't that great. Plus it was also released on the Amstrad and Commodore 64, which I believe is also quite rare for a publisher like Toposoft to release.

Does anyone have any more information on what "Golden Shoe" was supposed to be?

Not adding much here, but in a database of Amiga games, there's an entry for Adidas Golden Shoe by Ocean France.

It's marked as unreleased. Link here: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=uk

This second link expands on that: https://translate.google.co.uk/translat ... rev=search

I'm not sure about "not adding much" as I think you've pretty much solved the mystery! ;)

That first link has adidas Championship Football and adidas Golden Shoe going to the same entry.
The second link has adidas Golden Shoe as an alternative name for adidas Championship Football.

On that basis, I'd say it was adidas Championship Football which came out in 1990...

Yes that does make sense!

Adidas Championship Football was released in 1990 at around the time of the World Cup. I wonder if it was delayed from 89 in order to make the most of that? It’s strange as it doesn’t seem to have any magazine previews.
