How about the sound effect(s) on the menu screens in the Horace games?

Only just twigged, I think the sound effect is the same as the one used within the games themselves...

EDITED - the Penetrator sound effect in question only used a 177 byte data table. Usable!

Good call - and I've managed to rip out the code.

I'm disgusted and saddened that it took this long for somebody to even attempt a nob joke. Shame on you all :D

Can I just say these are the sort of quality threads I come here for? Threads like 'little bugs in the database' can do one, IMHO. ;)

Though of course I recognise the importance of aforementioned bugs thread - Spectrum Computing's raison d'etre and lifeblood..

I've always loved the sound effects in Julian Gollop's games: Laser Squad, Rebelstar, Chaos, Lords of Chaos.

The Atic Atac respawning sound: "bip bip bip beeeeeep".

The "tsew" sound when you lose a life in MM/JSW.

Maybe we could make a rule for that thread? For every 8 bug reports there has to be a nob gag?

The rocket taking off in Jetpac. Which I’m sure somebody like Orbital or The Chemical brothers had a track that had a bit that sounded like it.

Talking about Jetpac... The noise when Jetman dies sounds suspiciously like a liquid fart

Sir Lancelot is a fantastic game, but it must have one of the most annoying uses of the beeper. Being quite hard, you experience it a lot—the funeral march, followed by a long pitch bend, none of which can be interrupted. No wonder POKEs evolved to get around that specific 'feature'.

The "Three Two One Gooo!" sound in Grand Prix Simulator was stunning back int he day. Probably not what you're looking for though.

Oh that's nice, and you can spot a proper accent* too.

As an aside, which game had "Riders Launch"? (or something like that)
Probably not what you're looking for though.
Aye I'm guessing it'll take up more space than I have available.

*by which I mean 'not obviously robotic', rather than 'from the provinces**'

**if you want to hear the provinces check out Chrimblast.

I don't remember that about Sir Lancelot, think I was deafened by how much game they got into 16k. It's a real affliction! :D

But yeah, are you ever right, been playing a lot of early 80's arcade games on MAME recently and one thing I have noticed myself (that I'm very glad gaming grew out of), is the need for a whole little monophonic beeper tone, one for dying, then a fanfare immediately after announcing your next life. All as you say, unskippable. Probably a lot of the early Speccy games were influenced from that and there are so many tone deaf versions of the funeral march out there it's not as funny as it should be.

It's odd that in the same vain when Abide with Me played each time you died in WANTED:Monty Mole it never really annoyed me.

The "Nodes Of Yesod From The Odin Computer Graphics Team" opening speech was pretty impressive, and took you by surprise, when you first loaded it.

And, though it's not so well known perhaps, the "Not Up" little speech sample in Jonah Barrington's Squash was godawful... I mean "iconic".

And how could we forget the sound effects of The Way Of The Exploding Fist? Especially the flying-kick-in-the-face and punch-in-the-groin. Very satisfiying (when performed on your opponent of course  )

The sound from Dynamite Dan when you lose a life is excellent, it always stands out for me because before I heard that, I didn't know that the Spectrum could be coerced into making that kind of noise. But all the sound in both Dynamite Dan games is great. It's no real surprise that Rod Bowkett was a musician in his day job. Really wish he'd written some more games.

Good call, and easier to rip the code than I imagined. It'd be interesting to know how Rod wrote the amazing title music, given that the beep engine is pretty simple. (Actually I wonder what Mozart would make if it).

I didn't play DD2 back in the day, but looking at them now it seems less attention was paid to sound in the sequel.

That flashing teleporter alarm noise really takes me back!
