The best Speccy game by Mastertronic Added Dimension: vote

Post by PeteProdge »

Mastertronic Added Dimension, also known as M.A.D., was a way for Mastertronic to put out what they deemed were higher-quality-than-usual games, at a £2.99 price point. Most of the 29 original games they issued for the ZX Spectrum, met that criteria.

Later on, Mastertronic Added Dimension/M.A.D. got replaced by Mastertronic Plus, another brand of 'premium' feel games at a slightly higher price point than the typical budget games, although over half of that Spectrum catalogue were re-releases. I'll cover that in a poll next week.

For now, it's all about the original ZX Spectrum games released by Mastertronic Added Dimension AKA M.A.D...

Mastertronic Added Dimension also had three re-releases for Spectrum users, which were:
Manic Miner by Bug-Byte Software
Delta Wing by Creative Sparks
Action Force by Virgin Games
These aren't up for voting though, original titles only!

A genuine tough one for me. I bought all the MAD releases when they came out and played them all to death...even the rubbish ones.

It's between 180 and Zub for me. Had to go with 180 in the end, it's definitively a fantastic darts simulator.

Got to be 180 for me as it's easily the best darts game available.

Zub by a mile, Amaurote had gorgeous gfx but damn was a tough game...
180, best darts game ever, but not a patch on these previous 2.

Zub
Amaurote
180

Also Terminus and Sport Of Kings. Top notch.
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

It's a pretty good line-up, really. Some of these polls, I struggle to make a top 3 but I could probably do...oh, at least a credible top 5 from these. 180 at the top of course; it's a bit easy, but is such a great game to play even now that it has to be in first place.

Never played Motos, but I need to try it some time.
I always thought Knight Tyme was the best of the Magic Knight games.
The maze levels of Plexar were brilliant, with having to swap floor-to-ceiling to solve them. Unfortunately your movement was so sluggish in the rolling levels that they were completely unplayable.
And Terminus was a great game, apart from the pointless and stupidly unplayable bouncing-ball at the end of the character roster. You just had to play as if you only had 3 lives, not 4.

Special mention to Stormbringer for that 128K tune though. Still think it's one of the best 8-bit chip-tunes of all time - right up there with C64's Monty On The Run.

180 gets a win here, just as it did in the Best classic Speccy game beginning with # poll, and deservedly so. Best darts game over on the platform, I'd say. 8 votes secured that spot.

Amaurote got a close second, with 7 votes. (I'd have thought the incredible Zub would have been in with a shout, but no).

One of the Magic Knight trilogy (er, alright, quadrilogy) gets third place, as Spellbound has 3 votes. That won't be the last of Magic Knight, as...

...Knight Tyme is at joint fourth place, alongside Zub. 3 votes each.

Terminus is placed fifth, with 2 votes.

Jointly in sixth place with 1 vote each: Master Of Magic; Motos; Play It Again, Sam and Droids.

On the proportional voting system...

180 16
Spellbound 7
Zub 6
Knight Tyme 5
Amaurote 3
Master Of Magic 3
Motos 2
Stormbringer 2
Angle Ball 1
