Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
Yes, it's the opposite of this thread.
The stickmen of Valhalla make it a contender...
Lode Runner looks like a BASIC game made out of UDGs...
To include a more modern game - LumASCII has to be noted, made out of the pure Sinclair ROM font. (It does look good when you see it play though.)
But that's just what I think. Now it's your turn...

I can't agree with some of these definitions of "awful". Some of these graphics are just very stylised. Chaos is a classic.

Chaos is my favourite game of all time. The graphics are quite UDGish, but at a really high standard for that format. It's a tricky one, as the game's layout makes it very difficult to make visual improvements.

Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
I suppose I'm remembering when I bought it. In the shop, looking at the screenshot at the back of the inlay. Comparing it to whatever games were next to it, possibly showing the Amiga screenshots...
I took a chance on Chaos, thinking I was going to regret it. Of course I didn't - it's the only Speccy game I still regularly play. But I think a Choas screenshot doesn't compare to the screenshots of hundreds of other mundane shooters.
Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
I stumbled on Chaos quite late in the Speccy's life, but like others here it's my favourite Speccy game.
Being an impressionable kid at the time of release, I was quite susceptible to the magazine articles & reviews.
Perhaps it skipped my notice due to the magazines' lukewarm reception... But it was also a time where they were all still being a bit stingy on colour, so seeing small, static graphics rendered in dull greyscale probably didn't help bring it to people's attention...

Return of the Things (Design Design software, 1984... but apparently had very little distribution at the time and slipped under most people's radar until it was on Sinclair User's cover tape in 1991)
The sequel to the equally spartan looking "Hall of The Things" and it is flipping brill. I want to go and play it right now. You should too. (And if you redefine the keys, make sure you define the keys so that the one for each direction also presses fire).
Not beautiful is it? But it's blisteringly fast.

Mined-Out by Quicksilva had basic graphics, but, was a great game to play.
Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
Well I was never put off by the graphics in Football Manager, was still engrossed in the game highlights despite the stickmen and the oversized goals.

Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
For most of these games I'd consider the graphics dated or primitive, not awful.
Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
I know what you mean. It's hard to define isn't it? Of the ones mentioned here that are not 'primitive', maybe Maziacs is an example of bad graphics. At the moment I can only think of awful games with awful graphics! (Friday 13th, Highlander, Centurions).

Who Dares Wins 2:
Graphics are quite ugly in my opinion but playability is surprisingly good. If you love Commando or Ikari Warriors then you should like
this one too.
I have temtations to give it a modding treatment, maybe one day ...

Nah. Nothing could beat Ikari in my book.
Every man should plant a tree, build a house, and write a ZX Spectrum game.

Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
Always enjoyed this game but never once questioned its graphics or presentation. Looking at it now without my rose-tinted spectacles on it does look rather bollocks. Still plays very well though - this is one of the games I still play from time to time when I want a Spectrum fix.

Realm of Impossibility.
Re: Awful graphics, but a brilliant game
I'm not sure about "brilliant", but playing it with a friend was hilarious.
