The best classic Speccy game beginning with A: discussion

Post by PeteProdge » Mon Dec 18, 2017 11:48 am

It's been decided to have separate voting polls for the best Speccy games.

The plan is to start a week of discussion to nominate the games of a certain letter (starting with A this week), then the following week, we put up a poll of those games.

It's vital we get all viable games named in this thread, as when we start the week-long poll for A on Mon 25th December (I believe some would call this Christmas Day), we can't add any latecomers during the voting.

These are some viable contenders mentioned in the A-Z thread.
  • Atic Atac by Ultimate
  • Arkanoid by Imagine
  • Amaurote by Mastertronic
  • Alien Highway by Vortex
  • Abadia del Crimen by Opera Soft S.A.
  • Avalon by Hewson
  • Alien 8 by Ultimate
  • Ant Attack by Quicksilva
...and also some from WOS's current top 100...
  • Auf Wiedersehen Monty by Gremlin
  • Academy by CRL
  • Astro Marine Corps by Dinamic
These are all going to be in the polling options when voting starts on Christmas Day. Now, hit reply and type "Hey, hang on, you should also add..."...

Remember these are for the classic games - commercially released into the mainstream, so no demos or homebrew stuff in this.

Airwolf could be the greatest game ever, it's just that nobody has seen what's after 'the wall'...

Hey, hang on, you should also add Ad Astra, as a classic, original shooter!

The rest of games are ok for me.

I would suggest Android II and the UK pseudo-FPS version of Aliens, but I'd still vote for Atic Atac!

Well, Academy is brilliant, Amaurote is technically superb (albeit a bit tedious), and Ant Attack should be commended for being hand-assembled alone.

Auf Wiedersehen, Monty is . . . cute. Not sure if I’d praise it for anything else.

Bump!

A reminder that the list below of 19 games will be the only titles you can vote on from Monday 25th to Tues 31st, unless you can think of any more...
  • Abadia del Crimen by Opera Soft S.A.
  • Academy by CRL
  • Action Force II by Virgin Games
  • Ad Astra by Gargoyle Games
  • Alchemist by Imagine
  • Alien 8 by Ultimate
  • Alien Highway by Vortex
  • Aliens (UK version) by Electric Dreams
  • Airwolf by Elite
  • Amaurote by Mastertronic
  • Anarchy by Hewson
  • Ant Attack by Quicksilva
  • Arkanoid by Imagine
  • Arkanoid II - Revenge Of Doh by Imagine
  • Astro Marine Corps by Dinamic
  • Atic Atac by Ultimate
  • ATF by Digital Integration
  • Auf Wiedersehen Monty by Gremlin
  • Avalon by Hewson
...so if you can think of any decent contenders, tell us before Monday, as we cannot add any more to the proposed poll once it's instigated.

Should have been re-released with the title “Socratic paradox - I know one thing; that I know nothing“

Chortle! Art/Philosophy/Game crossover. The Speccy ahead of its time yet again.

Perhaps Schrodinger's game is appropriate too - it's both good and crap at the same time, until you pass the wall and discover it's, well, impossible crap.

Subjectively, one more game that deserves a mention is Ano Gaia. Probably my go-to game starting with 'A'. Illegally blasphemously hackered to make that drill level playable since ages, it just needs a loading screen now. |:

Probably will vote ATF though, in large part because I love the somewhat-underdone 'meanwhile, stuff happens in the background' simulation concept thing regardless of the genre (and mostly dgaf about historical value and whatnot).
