It's unfair that the original Tomb Raider (1996) wasn't the game of that year because it was a very original game.

... and in my humble opinion there are far better 'games of the year' than Ghostbusters in 1984.

Remember that these are the Christmas number ones - simply the ones that sold the most around late December of that year. Not necessarily the biggest selling of that year.

Tomb Raider was originally a Sega Saturn game (yeah, heavily associated with the PlayStation, oft-cited as THE signature game for that platform), which was released in October 1996. Still, FIFA wins out. Which pretty much continues to this day, it's that and Call Of Duty that dominate the games market. (Unoriginal boring trite in my eyes, but hey, once you've got a cash cow...)
