Raffaele Cecco became a star programmer on the Spectrum scene, back in the day, especially for some classics he did like Equinox, Exolon or Cybernoid for legendary publishers Mikro-Gen and Hewson Consultants. Journalists and gamers alike praised his games and even today we can see their influence on homebrew games like Vallation, Hyperkill or Zunkinox, just to name a few.

But, what's your favourite? What do you think about his games now? Do you think his games have stood the test of time?

The games are sorted out chronologically. Please, VOTE and COMMENT!!

Cybernoid for me, it's the one I played the most and as you say - it spawned it's own sub genre (I think) that people still pay homage to.

I tried to like Equinox there's too many things spawning left right and centre, you don't get a moment's rest.

Try as I might, whenever I look at the Stormlord sprite I see him as clean shaven, the beard seems to be part of his clothes.

Exolon. Who said linear games were crap? The graphics and the sound effects are great, so great are every screen. A masterpiece.

The cybernoid games are great too. Too difficult but always cool to play.

Yes, Cybernoid for me too. Exolon is great fun, a really playable game even today, and probably his easiest game, but it wasn't so influential. Yeah, there were some games clearly inspired by it, like Yeti (Destiny Software, 1988), or Cerius (Atlantis Software, 1988), but not so many. Cybernoid, instead, has loads of clones: Aquasquad (Atlantis, 1988), Rough Justice (Cronosoft, 2003, Shark (Players Premier, 1989), Task Force (Player Premier, 1989), Sophia (Alessandro Grussu, 2017)... Anyway Uridium is the most "clonefied" Hewson game.

The Stormlord sprite was originally designed by Nigel Brownjohn, Cecco's old friend at Mikro-Gen and the same guy who designed Vitorc, Exolon's main character (later on he teamed up with Chris Hinsley to produce Verminator, Custodian and Onslaught, these last two published by Hewson on 16 bit). I think he did a good job, but as you say is a little bit confusing. Sadly Cecco himself did a much worse design for the Stormlord character on Deilverance, his weakest game, IMHO. I hate that huge Stormlord sprite and the game overall.

Exolon for me, not much to say there it's practically Spectrum-defining, and that melody is just like hnnng being back home and all. :)

I also like Solomon's Key a lot, excellent playability, easily a close second.

I did play Exolon a lot, that and rebelstar were the 2 main pillars of spectrum loading enjoyment

Raffaele is one of my main sources of inspiration, in terms of both graphical style and gameplay, and almost all of his games are true gems in my opinion. But should I choose one, my vote goes to Exolon. A real masterpiece.
