ZX HSC Round 5 - Chuckie Egg / Laser Snaker

Post by akeley »

Here you can vote for one of the two games for the next round. This selection was made by picking the third game submitted per each active player.

The second game of the round will be drawn from the pool of the remaining ones using RNG.

This round will start on Sunday afternoon.

DEAR LURKERS! You can still join in at any time! Please do! There will be a chance to submit scores for previous rounds later in the season, but in any case competing in single rounds is fun too.

So, a bunch of lesser known/popular games and one megahit. Any chance of a cupset?
(hahah I've never thought I'll get to use this word one day...I hate it, but here it is :))

I agree with Juan, Terra Cresta is a fantastic port, but Chuckie Egg would be better for competition.
btw, too many great games here.
I hope that those who are not selected now, will be in competition again...

Ok, the voting is over, the winner is Chuckie Egg. The RNG has answered smurphboy's prayers and chosen Laser Snaker as the second game on the bill.

Games for this round are:

Chuckie Egg (A'n'F Software, 1983, chosen by clebin)

Laser Snaker (Poppy Soft (UK), 1983, chosen by smurphboy)

Difficulty settings for Laser Snaker:
SPEED 0
DIFFICULTY 2

The round ends at midnight on Sunday 30th Aug. Look out for a bonus game on Wednesday!

New players can still join in, at any time. Rules of this HSC are written up here and here, any questions please ask.

So this week we have another huge classic - Laser Snaker - and a lesser known title, Chuckie Egg. Wait, or is it the other way around?

Good luck!

Looking forward to playing Chuckie Egg again. What a game.

I missed my voting opportunity but thought I’d give Kosmic Kanga a vote anyway as I’m a huge fan of that game.

Fairly happy with this, looking forward to giving Chuckie Egg a decent crack (ho ho). I remember being able to get to the levels where the caged bird is flying about, not sure how good I am now though.

Not a big fan of Kosmic Kanga so glad it didn't win...

I couldn't decide on the vote, so waited to see if I needed to put a decider later on (and then I missed the deadline).

You can't go wrong with Chuckie Egg. If Laser Snaker's screenshot is anything to go by, it looks like you can go very wrong with that, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt

So do we need to agree what difficulty we're playing Laser Snaker on? Or does it increase when you start at the lowest?

Haven't played it yet but as it's a Steve Crow game I'm assuming it'll be decent... :)

Both speed and difficulty set to 3?

Indeed, if there's a difficulty setting we all need to play on the same level. 3 seems a fair shake. R-Tape, if you could add this info to Laser Shaker's description in my previous post it'd be great: viewtopic.php?p=44556#p44556

Sorry, JFR :)

Yep I can add that.

But thinking again, do we think 2 would be more enjoyable?

Just played a bit of Chuckie Egg. Never really played it much back in the day (although I did have it). Why do I struggle so much with games that have lifts in them?!

The speed on Laser Snaker goes up to 9! Anything above 0 is a bit silly IMO.

My suggestion for difficulty settings to use:

SPEED 0
DIFFICULTY 2

I just had a quick go, these values seem fine - playable, but challenging*. I think many of us still suffer from Cannonball PTSD so let's take it easy. Please adjust that intro post accordingly, thank you.

(actually, I just totally suck at these kinda games :)

Wow good going. 4945 here.

Great game this, and plenty of tactical options for a HSC.

I played this a lot back in the day. It was one of my picks. It's easy to play it for fun, or to really push it and get that score depending on your mood.

Could be a good idea, seeing how things are in Ye Ol' Table.

...and what with clebin already laying down the law in Chuckie Egg ;) (398,950 WTF)

Yeah, flippin' eck..!

First attempts:

Chuckie Egg - 16,570
Laser Snaker - 1,425

Wasn't sure of the Laser Snaker keys but it seemed to let you use cursor keys.

Sadly Laser Snaker is cursor keys or Kempston. Still a great game though.
