The best Speccy game by Creative Sparks: discussion

Post by PeteProdge »

The five games from Thorn EMI for the Speccy didn't exactly set the world alight, so the board at Thorn EMI Video decided on a rebrand, to avoid the poor quality tainting them. Creative Sparks became the new name for their home computer output in 1984. The following year, they became separate from Thorn EMI due to a management buyout. They decided to buy out Mikro Gen for a pretty penny in 1987, but that could have been the making of the downfall of Creative Sparks, as later that year, they went belly up, owing £1.5m.

For the ZX Spectrum, they put out entirely new titles, with the exception of a re-release of River Rescue from Thorn EMI.

Naturally, we only want to concentrate on the new releases, I make it these 15 games...

Black Hawk
Danger Mouse in Double Trouble
Danger Mouse in Making Whoopee!
Danger Mouse in the Black Forest Chateau
Delta Wing
Leonardo
Money Manager
Orc Attack
Snodgits
Special Delivery
Stagecoach
Story House
Tarantula
Tower Of Evil
Vikings

Have I got it right?

And yes, I'll be doing two other polls for budget label off-shoots Sparklers and Super Sparklers...

I believe that Tarantula had the same map layout as Rollercoaster by Elite?

Average poor quality. Orc Attack for me. And maybe DM in Making Whoopee too.

Yep, that looks like the complete list.
I haven't tried them all but for now I'd go with Danger Mouse in Black Forest Chateau

I use to own Danger Mouse in Double Trouble.

Not a bad little game for its time from what I remember, a few different parts to the game. Reasonably playable.

Back in the day I got quite into Danger Mouse in the Black Forest Chateau. I must say, Creative Sparks games came in some nice clam shell boxes (I think that's what they're called) and the box art was typically very good.

Black Hawk, it is a very good game and the unique use of the first 'intercept' mode and if anything gets past you you play as the actual plane!
Crash gave it a 92% score, not bad for an 1984 game.

Can't say I have heard of any of the others though!

Me too. Probably gets my vote.
I remember jumping onto the electricity nodes in one section and it being a bugger on the timing of it.
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

I don't think anyone would class Leonardo (the drawing package) a game.
I did have loads of fun with it though.

Probably the same for Money Manager.

Well spotted, you two!

I will omit these two, these lists should be games only, of course!

Snodgits has a certain cartoony charm to it.

Vikings is listed as MIA and Story House is a story writing program for primary school children, so not really a game.

I gave Tower Of Evil a go, it's a fun but frustrating maze shooter, so I don't think it will make my top three.
