I think the top 100 games on spectrum20.org is the most comprehensive / sane list of top Speccy games.

Chronos right down between Ghostbusters and Adrian Mole? Oh, that's mean. :(

Interested to see how this pans out.
With something like the SNES you know the top 5 will consist of Zelda, Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Metroid and Castlevania.
With the Spectrum anything goes even All or Bloody Nothing!

I've got my own top 100, but I'm not going to post it because it'll just result in abuse..

So far none of your first 10 have made it into my top 100, though Wizball might be a close one, lurking outside in the low hundreds...

Perhaps the top scores list? http://spectrum20.org/games/best

It is of course impossible to decide on one-voice top 20 (never mind top 100) but I think it's a fun topic to think about none the less.

For me Top Spectrum Games mean actually top games which have super strong ZX roots and also brought something new to the gaming table. So, if your top 20 does not have a very strong presence of the following titles, I probably won't care much for it. (Also, Laser Squad must be in the top 3. Or else.)

In no particular order: Knight Lore, Lords Of Midnight, The Hobbit, Movie, Rebelstar/Laser Squad, Chaos, Nether Earth, Ant Attack, Trap Door, The Great Escape, Avalon/Dragontorc, Shadowfire, Dun Darach...and quite possibly few others in the similar vein I forgot about.

Of course, there are also some amazing ports such as Renegade, Bomb Jack or R-Type, but the above will always take precedence for me.

There are a few of those, yes, but some are missing and I'm not going to include games in a personal top 100 that I've never played or didnt play much back in the day. It's not a definitive list, just my personal favourites.

Someone already said Chronos is terrible and shouldn't be on the list at all!

That's actually a Top 3,600 or so. But I'm very excited to discover from it that I wrote the third-worst Spectrum game of all time, and that someone actually played it all the way to the end, which is more than I ever did 😄
Famed company with sqij and eastenders stu!

I'll consider it once jdanddiet has finished his list...

From the list so far, only Mikie and They Stole a Million are on mine...

Actually, looking at the screenshot, that's a lake not an ocean.

No Dan Dare? Don't forget 100 games is a lot - after you get past 50 or so the quality and renown of the games is bound to drop off.

I think this is an almost impossible task.
Rebelstar 2 would be my number 1 but I don't know how I'd begin to rank the rest.

I think I'd have to have Marauder higher than Glass. Even though Glass looked good, game play wise it was pretty boring. Marauder, IMO, was another classic Hewson Shmup. As much as I loved trying play Wizball I simply found it too frustrating.

Yes in hindsight Marauder is a tad low. Maybe it'll improve its position next year!

Laser Squad's an excellent game but I'm not a fan of the hidden movement or the rotate and move mechanics.
A lot of 2 player games end with a soldier from each side hiding around a corner, each unable to advance without being caught in the enemiy's opportunity fire!

Rebelstar 2 may only has one scenario but it's a more enjoyable game imho.
