Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
The surprising ones in that list for me are Licence to Kill (vaguely remember playing it, it was OK-ish I suppose) and Future Games, which has a great tune, and is a nice idea, but I didn't think the games themselves were all that good.

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
While on the topic of top 100, the old WOS site used to show the top 100 action games and the top 100 adventure games. Does anyone know how to get hold of the top 100 Adventures list?
Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
You can still see the top 100s - they're on the archive page of the WoS classic site.

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
Well we are still in the lower reaches of the list and I played both a lot back in the day and have a lot of affection for them. Toxard shoot and the jumping game in future games are still fun and there was a fun little shooting game in between. I think the humour appeals to me as well.

A good game but I really think you should reconsider Count Duckula 2!

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
It's interesting to look at Top 100 games that various people have compiled. Some of the usual suspects show up in every list, but often there are new gems to be found. It's a nice way to discover good games that you aren't aware of or just haven't bothered to try out. The HSC contest is another way to do that
I'm in the process of creating folders on my ZXBaremulator micro-SD that consist of various Top100s. Each folder is a different Top100 or TopWhateverNumber. Inside each folder are all the games TZX and TAP files belonging to that list, prefixed with the rank number for sorting, for example "001-Kosmic Kanga". I'll be adding a "Wizwords Top 100" folder pretty soon.
Here are my folders so far:
Top 100 (WOS)
Top 100 - Your Sinclair
Top 100 - Your SInclair Reader
Top 100 Adventure Games (WOS)
Top 100 of all TIme - Kim Justice (from Youtube)
Top 25 (some random top 25 on a Google search)
Are there any other published Top100s out there worth adding?

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
YouTube is full of top 100 videos, just have a search for them.
By the way, a bit off-topic, I've come across this video covering (according to the author) all the Spectrum games -almost- (sic) in one video, more than six hours!

The top games listed on spectrum20.org is the best / most credible list of top Speccy games.

Quite liked Dandy (though you can't actually finish it can you?) - though it doesn't make my top 100.jdanddiet wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 4:02 pm No 77 released today

Thanks for that link, I ended up trawling through it and reading the articles when I probably should've been working..

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
Emlyn Hughes International Soccer is great! The best football game on the Spectrum. I never understood why people liked Match Day.

This is the point of Spectrum20.Rev_Stuart_Campbell wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 3:55 pm Emlyn Hughes International Soccer at #15? Yeah right.
We have had 40 odd years of individual's personal subjective opinions of games, to degrees of accuracy that are rendered pointless when one mag gives a game 87%, while another gives it 38%. There are also the public polled scores, like the old WoS scores, that get hugely skewed by over active unaccountable fan boys - and the individual top 10 / 20 / 100 lists - these largely reflect the games that the compiler is aware of, as well as their personal tastes.
Just scores from 1/awful to 5/excellent - of folk who have to justify opinions with a quick review. Outlying opinions, such as yours regarding Emlyn Hughes, will be taken into account, but averaged out. Completely crazy opinions/scores usually trigger a few balancing reviews from the gamers who regularly browse the recent reviews (the site is a great way to discover interesting games).
This is why I go with Spectrum20 as the "authoritative" guide to Speccy games.
And - if there is a game that you feel is unfairly placed on Spectrum20 - I'm guessing Emlyn Hughes for you - you should write a review to get your opinion included. It is a good community resource.

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
I'm with RWAC, I reckon Emlyn Hughes is an ace game, I rate it as the best footy game on the Speccy. I still quite enjoyed playing Match Day 2 but once Emlyn emerged I switched my allegiance...
I think Speccy 2.0 is great, but I mainly like it for its entertaining reviews... Also it's been going for a while, so although some games have no ratings/reviews there have been some fairly dedicated (and masochistic!) reviewers over the years and plenty of ratings for most of the better known Speccy games.
Out of interest does anyone know how the Speccy 2.0 top 20 scores are calculated?
I'm assuming it must be based on a minimum number of reviews, otherwise there'd be loads of games tied on 5/5 at the top based on one or two ratings. I guess this is something to consider with any top 'n' list, you probably need a critical mass of people contributing over a bit of time.

Re: Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games
Speccy 2.0's list is okay-ish, and perhaps the best we can get when it comes to "people's" ranking, but to me it's a little bit too sketchy to really represent what ZX Spectrum was/is all about. The top two are arcade ports - is the best ZX game ever really a manic joystick waggler? And as valiant as the RI port is from the technical point of view I would never play it instead of the much superior arcade version, nor would I say it was that important in the Spectrum's history.
It gets a bit better later on, but when significant classics such as The Hobbit, Turbo Esprit, Knight Lore, or Lords Of Midnight are buried somewhere outside the top 50 then it's not a list I'd recommend to a newcomer - or want the future generations to look at and think that's how it really went down.
That's why assorted "authority" rankings from magazines, or some other bodies, actually work a bit better I think. Unfortunately all we ever got was the YS one, which is a bit bonkers, which in turn is in line with the great Sinclair tradition perhaps, but not helpful if you are making a space capsule to send to some curious aliens

I've just noticed that Rainbow Islands is #2, it's got a score of 4.78 out of 5, but every reviewer seems to have given it 5/5 - is it possible to score a game without reviewing it?
