ZX HSC Final Round - Green Beret / Motos / Manic Miner

Post by akeley »

That's it, folks, next week is the final week of this illustrious competition. So why don't we go a little bit wild and PLAY EVERYTHING!!1!!...ok ok , maybe not that wild - let's just say 3 games from all the remaining ones.

There will be no bonus game, just 3 top games from this poll. And, oh, it's also another Redemption Round, so you can submit any improved scores for the previously featured games(you can start working on this one now).

Busy week!

Byte Bitten, Green Beret and Motos. In that order.

The end already? Just as the northern hemisphere is entering its brightest and most auspicious winter for decades? :o

Just made my pick..Motos, Green Beret and Dan Dare (just because I haven't played it before).
Motos - Cool game
Green Beret - Great game but hard, and keeping in the spirit of Joffa Smith games.

Redemption Round: What can I say, KFK here I come!!!

I went with Green Beret, TLL and Motos.

Green Beret - classic!
TLL - everyone says it’s a classic so it’s time I tried it.
Motos - not played it either, but looks like fun.

I was tempted by The Pyramid and Cookie but fancy ending the compo on something new.

It's great Juan! Think of it as sumo for robotic beetles and stuff, on the Spectrum.

Ok, the voting is over, the winner is Green Beret, with Motos and Manic Miner coming in at 2nd and 3rd.
So:

Green Beret (Imagine, 1986, chosen by smurphboy)

Motos (Mastertronic, 1987, chosen by R-Tape). But remember - DOWNLOAD THE .TZX, not the .TAP (the .tap has a cheat mode activated).

Manic Miner (Matthew Smith, 1983)

This round ends at midnight on Sunday 11th October. Yes, it's a TWO WEEKS ROUND. What with being a) action packed FINAL round b) with 3 games c) and also being the REDEMPTION ROUND (this means you can submit scores for all the games from previous rounds! So if you have missed one, or have an improved score now is the time to post it.)

New players can still join in, and play anything ranging from one to all the games :). Rules of this HSC are written up here and here, any questions please ask.

Well, there you go. Two big classics and one lesser known but (allegedly 8-) ) great game. Last round. The winner is most likely already known (unless somebody "redemption's" clebin) but there still lot to fight for below #1.

Have fun / good luck!

Some nice final games to play...! Who knows, I might even make a concerted effort to complete Manic Miner.

If we decide to go back and play games from the previous rounds, should we post any updated scores in those threads?

Happy to do whatever's easiest for smurphboy, don't want to cause a nervous breakdown...

Easy enough to do as long as it is consistent. Please add to the end of the round thread and I'll pick up the redemption round scores from there.

For Motos - make sure you download the tzx and not the tap. The tap file appears to have infinite lives enables.

My suggestion would be to keep it all in this thread if possible, to save smurphboy some work but also not to clog the SC's front page with our HSC threads.

Can you submit a new score full stop? Or has it had to be submitted previously?

Of course, can be a totally new score. That's how new players can catch up on the whole compo if they have time and will :)

My first scores for this week...

Green Beret: 18,900
Manic Miner: 19,430
Motos: 29,300

There I was, playing Motos, racking up a huge high score, when I suddenly realised I wasn't losing any lives! The .tap file in the archive appears to have some kind of cheat activated. I then played the .tzx and got a much more realistic (for me) score. :D

I did point this out a few messages ago, but maybe we need to make it big and bold for people. I thought I was a god at this game until I realised ;-)

Yeah, R-Tape , if you could use your magic edit button and stick a warning about Motos in the 1st post...thank you.

Green Beret - 48,150
Manic Miner - 28,053
Motos - 54,900

First scores. Green Beret still frustrating and addictive in equal measure. Manic Miner - trying to remember the patterns to do some of the later rooms. Bluffed my way through Skylab Landing Bay but too hard to do that on the Warehouse. Motos - fun game. I'd have been very happy with that for £2.99!
