My question is - do these games use the same engine or is it just superficial similarity? Do they have the same authors?

They do look similar, but It's not the same authors.

The author's comment suggests it's a superficial similarity, it'd be interesting to see a disassembly.
And there it is above the mountains! Mind you if the author insists on having a superfluous 'f' in his surname who knows how many optimisations could be made now.
I was very tight on memory in general on this one. I even hid some data in the sky that cannot be seen because the pixel and background colours are the same.
