Evening Star for me. I just love train simulators, and this is a very good one.
In fact, this may be the first time I noticed the loading screen since I played it for years using some snapshot file downloaded from ftp.ijs.si around 1993/94.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
Elite is the best 8 bits game ever IMHO
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
Well I went for Enduro Racer as I loved it back in the day and spent many hours playing. But the other deciding factor was the fact that unbelievably it was the only one on the list that I have actually played. I’ve heard of a few of the games on that list, but most I’m afraid to say are a complete mystery to me!

Wow! Try most games, it's worth playing them. But if you have to choose only one, try Eric & the Floaters. Surprisingly simple and addictive
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll give it a go. Plan to relive my Spectrum days when my Next arrives, like the idea of having a standalone machine dedicated to the Speccy as opposed to just firing up an emulator on the PC. Even thinking of purchasing a tape machine and buying a few games on eBay for it. Currently regretting getting rid of the old collection years ago.Juan F. It looks like Exolon is winning. A bit surprising for me.
I suspected it to be Elite. Well, it seems that it has a very noisy and devoted fan base but nevertheless small

It should have been impossible for Elite to lose a fair election without some kind of global conspiracy behind it. I suspect other alien races want to prevent mankind from getting skilled at space combat and interplanetary commerce too soon.
So far, 3 people expressed their preference for Elite in this thread, but it only got 2 votes. I demand a recount!!!

Went for Elite.
Emlyn Hughes in second place.
I don't think Exolon has aged well at all, it was quite good, fairly slick game back in its time but I find it a bit tedious to play now.

Can't believe you didn't include Explorer.

Same here. I thought Elite's fanbase would be huge.
Still, I am pleased about Exolon's superb turnout, I'm one of the people who voted. None of my votes have ended up 'winning' yet...

Where were you when we ran the discussion thread for setting up this poll?
(And there are quite few Speccy games called Explorer... any particular one? I assume the Electric Dreams one?)

Still playing Elite Dangerous - so anything that laid out the groundwork over 30 years ago has been scientifically proven to be brilliant - FACT!

Floating voters take note, Everyone's a Wally does NOT shoot you the moment you press start.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
Interesting poll so far. Exolon might win but the second position still isn't clear. Elite, Enduro Racer and Everyone's a Wally are great contenders.

Published by Electric Dreams, written by RamJam. A fantastic game of... exploration. I sunk months into that game when I was a kid. Nothing has come close to it since, not in gameplay or depth.PeteProdge wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2018 7:03 pmWhere were you when we ran the discussion thread for setting up this poll?

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
You might want to check the authorship of a certain egg-themed platformer in that list, not to mention the authenticity of its loading screen.

Not on Twitter, left the Spectrum scene on 4th December 2018. Thanks folks, it was a pleasure knowing you.

I'm on mobile right now so don't want to risk a chubby fingered mistake and delete the whole poll but can edit that tomorrow (it's Clare Tucker, right? ;-p )
So what does the proper Crash cover tape loader look like?
Is there a version out there with the true loading screen? If not could somebody make one so we can put it in the archive.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
I thought, and the ZXDB seems to think, and Jonathan seems to think, that Jonathan wrote it.

However the mobygames page is also rather confused, with the same loading screen and
'by Claire Tucker, (c) 1989 Jonathan Cauldwell, graphics by Jonathan Cauldwell'.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
We've only got Jon's word for that, we have to be even handed and get Claire's side of the story.
(but seriously, a version with a hacked loading screen was uploaded to WoS so that's become the one we all see. If some can provide the true version this can be corrected. I have the covertape somewhere but not the means to make a TAP out of it)
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
Ah this is the right one. I'll dig out ZX-Blockeditor later and get this into the next site update.
Sorry, back to the poll. Vote Wally!

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
If voting ends on a tie between these games, then we should disqualify both and declare Elite as the winner!
It would be the only sensible thing to do, obviously.

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with E: vote
I've gone for Enduro Racer. It was between Enduro Race and Eskimo Eddie as EE was one of the first games I ever bought for my beloved Speccy. Enduro Racer won out though as me and me mate used top spend hours playing this game and still never managed to get past the Desert Section.
