First game to have an animated loading screen?

Post by Nomad »

So currently am trying to verify if Manic Miner was the first game the spectrum had that featured a animated loading screen.

What I am trying to do is verify a statement from Webb's assembly book where he states that it was the first. But the guy cites no sources for this... So I figured it was only fair to check before repeating it willy nilly.

I just did a procedural version of the flashing MM logo at the end of last year, just for fun!

Can't actually find the source right now, but I think it was about 138 bytes.

I can't think of anything earlier than that I must say.

Nice, I think will be some more wizardry going on

I used the one that Webb wrote about in his book. That was my next question was if the code could be made to be more efficient.

Manic miner is probably right, although I had an early Bug-Byte release that didn't have the animated screen at all so it's not necessarily as easy as comparing release dates....

Did Splat! beat MM to it?

If Manic Miner's loading screen is deemed to be "animated", then "Thru' the Wall" on the Horizons tape would predate it (The "Please Loading" animation). They both use FLASH attributes for their changes. There's no actual animation being done.
