It’s a great game, but I’m voting for Nether Earth.

Every man should plant a tree, build a house, and write a ZX Spectrum game.

Nodes of Yesod for me, followed by Nightmare Rally and Night Shade.
These three games I played the most back in the day and therefore I give them the advantage, although there are still some valuable titles.
Also, Odin is one of my favorite Spectrum publishers, so my choice is quite clear.

It's getting interesting.

I really wish I could remember where I got that username from! I have a vague memory of it coming from a flight sim - Falcon on the ST most likely, but it could have been something entirely different - it was about 20 years ago I created it on WOS.
To this day, I've still never played Nosferatu...

It's a great game. Actually they wasted money on the license as it didn't need it It would be great without any Belgian comics references at all.Anyone who recommends North & South? I loved the comics but never played the game.
I highly recommend it. Try it definitely and if it possible invite some friends to play again human player and not a computer. It makes it even more fun.
I learnt about this game around 1991 when I already had PC AT and my friend had Amiga. So my first experience was on machines more powerful than Spectrum. And it was a great fun.
A few years later with emulation and Internet I could check Specytum version.
It's really good. It has all elements of the original. Graphic mode limitations caused that soldiers are no longer blue and grey but all black. But they face different sides on battlefield so you won't confuse the sides. It really works in practice.
And the graphics are pretty. Try the fort sequence, it's extremely colourful for Speccy standards, even with fully colourful sprites.
I may say now it was me who gave it the best N game vote
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
After quite a bit of deliberation I've gone for Nightmare Rally. Like I put in the N Discussion thread, me and my mate went halves on this game and spent hours and hours driving that XR3 over jumps, avoiding things and driving into 2001-Esque Obelisk portals. My second vote, if we had one, would have been for Nodes of Yesod. I remember getting a copy at our local computer club and thought it looked amazing, however, i did get bored of it pretty quickly if I'm honest.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
I nearly voted for Nodes as there is a lot to like, but that doesn't include the gameplay unfortunately. It's just far too hard.
So I've gone for the one that's most fun - Nifty Lifty.

Another vote for Nebulus.
I originally played it on the ST but the Speccy version looks nearly as good and plays just as well.

Come on, Nebulus, you're almost at the top of the tower.

Nebulus FTW!!!

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
It was Nightshade or Nether Earth for my vote...
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
Very surprising winner. Yes, Nebulus has a very original concept but it had never any "cult status" for me.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
Yes, never really got into Nebulus. Thought it was a nice game idea but found it a bit frustrating. Although I could probably say the same for a few games on that list, including Nodes, that I voted for... Found this one quite a difficult choice.
Anyone play Lumo? One of the sub games was a shout out to Nebulus (I was crap at that too.. )

By the way, Nebulus on Spectrum has reduced gameplay compared to other versions
In other versions, you have also a shootemup section where you fly a spaceship (press play to see it) :

Yet it turned out to be a best N game anywway

More than half-an-hour. Unlike most of these polls, this one does not conclude until about 10am Tuesday (tomorrow), as I started it off a day late.
Right now, Nebulus has not 'won' (although yes, if you're gambling, that seems to be the very likely outcome), we've still got some time to go.

The 'spaceship' (submarine) section is really just a bonus round, and nothing to write home about. The Spectrum game has a more distilled Nebulus experience.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
Didn't realise about that (underwater) spaceship bit.
Although it's now made me understand the reason behind the inlay cover/advert/loading screen pictures..!

And there we go, Nebulus is crowned the best classic Speccy game beginning with N. A worthy winner.

Tower Topper? I recant my vote!

It's Tower Toppler(If this forum was dedicated to the American 16-bit market, it'd have to be part of the T poll, as it was known as Tower Topper.)
I never understood why Yanks gave different names to many games.
Nebulus = Tower Toppler
Barbarian = Death Sword
Green Beret = Rusn'n Attack
and so on, anybody knows more?

Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
There’s no one single reason. Sometimes it’s copyright/licensing-related, sometimes it’s because the name is considered confusing, inappropriate, or not catchy enough.
Nebulus was likely considered confusing (well, unless you’ve played the game, it is). Besides, it sounds like nebulous, which I’m sure didn’t help; Tower Toppler had a very concrete meaning in the context of the game.
The Green Beret was originally a Japanese title. It’s slightly Engrish, (because the term is normally used as a plural—the Green Berets). Perhaps it was thought to be too generic for the North American market, so they chose a catchier, pun-like, title capitalizing on the anti-Russian/Soviet craze.
Barbarian was changed so as not to get into potential altercations with Universal over the movie.
