Hard choice for me as there are a bunch of good games: N.O.M.A.D., Nebulus, Nightmare Rally, Nightshade, ... but my vote went to Nosferatu the Vampyre, a very cool atmospheric adventure.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
Nodes of Yesod for me. A very playable game that was extremely polished. Great music and one of the first games with recognisable speech: "Nodes of Yesod from the Odin Computer Gwaphics Team".

Me too. Nothing stands out for me in this poll but I played Nodes quite a bit, more than any of the others.
Liked the touch of the controllable space mole thingy, very imaginative.

This is a no brainer, as they say, especially because I have no brain anyway: Nebulus.
In spite of other good stuff:
- I like an ultraviolent go at Nemesis The Warlock now and then
- I've had interestingly sinister moments with the good Nosferatu the Vampyre, and I'm not talking about the horrific in-game tune
- North Star is a pretty good multi-action game: platform plus an undecided, ambiguous weapon which gives it a beat'em up or shoot'em up element. It's not clear.
- N.O.M.A.D. - I used to consider suspiciously the hacked versions I had in the eighties, it looked clumsy and slow to me. I've discovered how good it is only a couple of years ago, playing it furiously through the summer until I've finished it. Ok, I've used snapshots.
- Night Breed - An absurd movie, if you ask me. The game is not bad. I like the lighting effect very much.
- N.E.X.O.R. by the same guy who did Nosferatu, I've always had a soft spot for this neglected isometric 3d arcade/adventure and its endless vertical falling near the start, like Alice falling down the rabbit's hole, although it clearly doesn't stand out against the best of the genre.

That was nearly my vote, but then I remember how I spent weeks playing The New Zealand Story. It just about edges out Nebulus for me, but I'm happy for the toad-jumping cylinder-focused puzzley platformer to win. It's astonishing, highly original and very creative.

Anyone who recommends North & South? I loved the comics but never played the game.

Oh, it’s a ton of fun. Played it a lot back in the day. Needs the AY sound, though. Great sound effects and music.Juan F. Ramirez wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 3:33 pm Anyone who recommends North & South? I loved the comics but never played the game.

It’s a great game, but I’m voting for Nether Earth.

Nodes of Yesod for me, followed by Nightmare Rally and Night Shade.
These three games I played the most back in the day and therefore I give them the advantage, although there are still some valuable titles.
Also, Odin is one of my favorite Spectrum publishers, so my choice is quite clear.

It's getting interesting.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
I really wish I could remember where I got that username from! I have a vague memory of it coming from a flight sim - Falcon on the ST most likely, but it could have been something entirely different - it was about 20 years ago I created it on WOS.
To this day, I've still never played Nosferatu...

It's a great game. Actually they wasted money on the license as it didn't need it It would be great without any Belgian comics references at all.Anyone who recommends North & South? I loved the comics but never played the game.
I highly recommend it. Try it definitely and if it possible invite some friends to play again human player and not a computer. It makes it even more fun.
I learnt about this game around 1991 when I already had PC AT and my friend had Amiga. So my first experience was on machines more powerful than Spectrum. And it was a great fun.
A few years later with emulation and Internet I could check Specytum version.
It's really good. It has all elements of the original. Graphic mode limitations caused that soldiers are no longer blue and grey but all black. But they face different sides on battlefield so you won't confuse the sides. It really works in practice.
And the graphics are pretty. Try the fort sequence, it's extremely colourful for Speccy standards, even with fully colourful sprites.
I may say now it was me who gave it the best N game vote
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
After quite a bit of deliberation I've gone for Nightmare Rally. Like I put in the N Discussion thread, me and my mate went halves on this game and spent hours and hours driving that XR3 over jumps, avoiding things and driving into 2001-Esque Obelisk portals. My second vote, if we had one, would have been for Nodes of Yesod. I remember getting a copy at our local computer club and thought it looked amazing, however, i did get bored of it pretty quickly if I'm honest.
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
I nearly voted for Nodes as there is a lot to like, but that doesn't include the gameplay unfortunately. It's just far too hard.
So I've gone for the one that's most fun - Nifty Lifty.

Another vote for Nebulus.
I originally played it on the ST but the Speccy version looks nearly as good and plays just as well.

Come on, Nebulus, you're almost at the top of the tower.

Nebulus FTW!!!

It was Nightshade or Nether Earth for my vote...
Re: The best classic Speccy game beginning with N: vote
Very surprising winner. Yes, Nebulus has a very original concept but it had never any "cult status" for me.
