Cover artists

Post by Juan F. Ramirez »

I started a thread in WoS some weeks ago about cover artists. Their great work sometimes wasn't properly remembered in many cases. So it would be a good idea to add the artist name to its corresponding entry in the DB.

Sometimes the info is in the instructions, sometimes in an article in a blog, in a podcast... so if you have any info just post it. I'll update the list both in the Wos thread and here:

For Mastertronic - Curse Of Sherwood and Feud were by John Smyth at Words And Pictures. In fact, he did all the cartoon-like inlays for that label and its imprints. Mark Brady (also Words And Pictures) was the artist who did science-fiction style covers. It seems there were other artists from Words And Pictures, but the bulk of Mastertronic's offerings used these two people.

Great. So for a start, we must add these two games to the list:

I came across a pic of Donkey Kong (Ocean) with a little 'Cabarga' as a signature. After searching for it I found an american cartoonist named Leslie Cabarga, whose web page includes the DK artwork... Bingo! :D

Some info from Poland.

There was a guy called Mateusz Stryjecki who designed covers for Polish programs. He did:

Basic Test: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=18808
Czarny Poniedziałek : https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=21536
Funkcja Kwadratowa: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=8194
Handel Zagraniczny: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=21869
Hexan: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=17122
Kółko i Krzyżyk: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=18809
Młynek https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=21870
Tixo + Nim 2 https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=19065
Rachunek Prawdopodobieńtwa https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=17904

There's an interview with him at Polish site about Atari. Here's the Google translated version:

From that site, we can only infer that Leslie Cabarga did the poster or cover.
Conversion to SCR was probably done by "SHEIK." (look at SCR bottom left), who ever that is.

Are we just going for Cover artists, or also SCR (loading screen) artists ?

Cover artists, I think. Loading screen artists are usually credited on the game itself, that's not the case with cover artists that are not credited anywhere. We have famous cover artists like Wakelin, Azpiri, Royo or Steinar Lund, whose signatures were most of the time clearly visible on the cover artwork, but sadly in most other cases with other artists that signature is simply missing or out of frame.

Yes, that's the idea. To focus only in artwork (inlays, adverts) due to the lack of info in WoS infoseek, Spectrum Computing and other databases.

BTW, as far as I know, the artists for the Monument editions of the two games I have been involved in are:

Catacombs of Balachor
Cover: Olli Hihnalla

Balachor's Revenge
Cover: Olli Hihnalla
Internal art: Dave Hughes, Patti ?Richards and Lone Magpie

EDIT: According to Audionautas , the artist of Fernando Martin Basket Master (Dinamic) is Angel Luis Gonzalez and not Angel Luis Rodriguez, as I wrongly posted before. This can be checked in the game instructions.

Actually ZXDB (thus Spectrum Computing) has been cataloguing this information for quite some time!

At Spectrum Computing homepage, click on "HELP!" to access this page. The bottom table in this page shows all "inlay/poster artists" catalogued in ZXDB so far. Of course everything's listed there just for convenience, what really matters is that whenever anyone visits a game page, they will see the artist properly credited there.

I'm trying to keep this list updated, based on all the information posted by all of you in this thread. However there are many other areas in ZXDB that also required my attention, thus please excuse me if this list is somehow lagging behind...

If anyone identifies any mistake or missing information in this list, please let me know! Thank you!!!

0009335 Fantasy World Dizzy Code Masters Ltd Alistair Graham
This should be Alastair Graham, as per Rock Star Ate My Hamster (and a load of other Codies ones)
His name is confirmed on his website: http://alagram.co.uk

I recently read this article about Skool Daze and pretty much all of the artwork for Microsphere's games and ads were done by Keith Warrington
http://pixelatron.com/blog/skool-daze-f ... etrogamer/
"Keith Warrington, who’d already illustrated the ads and packaging for all of Microsphere’s games since Crevasse/Hotfoot."

Some of their covers didn't seem to have artwork as such but looking at the art for all the following I think it's pretty safe to credit him with all these covers:

Back to Skool
Contact Sam Cruise
Crevasse + Hotfoot
Evolution
Omnicalc
Omnicalc 2
Skool Daze
Sky Ranger
Train Game, The
Wheelie

In ZXDB, Alistair Graham is listed as a nickname of Alastair Graham:

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... l_id=18079

IIRC the name Alistair appears in original material of certain games (or perhaps in magazines?) so I thought it would be better to catalogue it and associate to the real name. This way, searches should work for both.

I get what you mean but shouldn't there be some consistency with how he's credited to games in the sense that his "proper" name is always first? Maybe I'm wrong but if I didn't know any better then when I skim through the list of games and artists it looks like Fantasy World Dizzy and Rock Star Ate My Hamster were done by two people with really similar names rather than them actually being the same person. To be honest, the Alistair name is really just a typo that's come up at some point. My nephew put Richerd on my Xmas card because his spelling is still at the phonetic stage but it doesn't mean it's an official variant of my name! ;)

Actually, to clarify what I mean by "official", Alastair and Alistair are both proper names but I don't think anyone who was called one or the other would accept the other spelling as being the correct spelling of their name. As for my name, some people choose to spell Richard with an e but I certainly don't! :)

Good point. Typos shouldn't be catalogued, only intentional nicknames.

I will fix it in the next ZXDB update!

The site talks about the film cover, but it's just the same as the game cover.

Phil Gascoine made some CRL artworks, as it's confirmed in the corresponding instructions:

Glug Glug
Handicap Golf
3D Desert Patrol
Lunar Rescue
Pandemonia
Stargazer Secrets

The next game's artworks were probably made by him, as they look similar to Gascoine's style (can't confirm as no mention of cover author in the instructions):

Caveman
Crawler
Endurance
Formula One
Grand National
Rescue
Woods of Winter
Zaraks
