edit: just watched the video walkthrough. It's one of the very rare games that gives you satisfying graphical sequences each time you accomplish an important task and when you finish the game. A certain effort has been put into the game.

Been playing Alien Syndrome this week. Even though it's a well-known game I never got into it. It's less polished, but more playable than I imagined.
Can't get past the first boss though—it's rock hard! I nearly got it using the flamethrower, but that meant I was in close quarters and lost my last life when it exploded.
Quality game.

There aren't many screens (but still make a map) and the puzzles are all sensible. Took me 731 turns, which is probably terrible by experienced players' standards.
Recommended for people that usually struggle with this genre.

I managed to get 3/5 trolleys then gave up! I couldn't work out how to get the floorboards!

Just played a bit of Urban Upstart (https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=7149) one of the first text adventures by Pete Cooke.
First, the map is huge, I started with pen and paper but get tired of running out of space and decided to download the whole thing:
The parser seems custom by Pete himself in something that feels like Basic, it allows simple commands but you have the feeling is doing many things on the background, the only problems I had are related to places, sometimes is not clear if you need to use a cardinal point or just type "go out".
Graphics look very simplistic and they use the vector technique similar to The Hobbit, but adding some UDG here and there, and can be disabled to speed up things. I like that he also use the border color on each location and time passes if you don't do anything. Yes, The Hobbit seems a like a strong influence.
The adventure really has a nostalgic feeling for some reason. It plays like a traditional fantastic adventure, but in the city, and it is surprising how many locations Pete managed to fit in 48k.

Urban Upstart was one of my first text adventures (and games in general). My English back then was rather basic and I could not undestand much of the British lingo but somehow sensed there is something special about this game. I haven't played for ~30 years but still remember the phrase "where people queue up to queue up for a job!".
The fact that it was a, well, urban adventure was also a welcome change from the usual fantasy/sci-fi tropes. Definitely on my high priority list to to play again soon (now with added bonus of knowing what actually is going on, and, after 15 years of UK living being able to appreciate the local nuances).

I really like the humour, setting, originality and graphics of Urban Upstart, but I was put off by the Spectrum 2.0 reviews that said the engine was too slow. It deserves a proper go, even if it involves pressing the turbo button in the emulator a lot, or playing at a higher MHz.

BTW another nice little adventure I decided to try is Trixie's Quest (https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=10950), a charming adventure by Arthur Simmons that uses Quill with no graphics.
It is short but quite challenging, due to the use of some very specific commands. Fortunately there is a walk-though available that helps with the more obtuse ones.

Dragonfire.
A bit of a howler this one, but there is a twinkle of a decent game here. Keys OP, A-duck, Spc-Jump. At first, it seems impossible to get into the castle (and occasionally it is), but you get used to it. Then you enter the castle and nick all the items while the dragon fires at you. Then back to screen 1.
That's it. Two screens repeated at increasing difficulty. I first hoped there were a lot more screens and was reminiscent of hunchback.
While none of the reviews are good, some of them seem generous. Your Spectrum magazine was the most honest:

Lol..this is why I love the old mags
I think I played this recently in Atari 2600 High score club. I thought it unbelieveably tedious but it seems to be big in Atariland.
Having said that, it's still better than the pointless (albeit beautiful), 0-gameplay castle minigame from Defender Of The Crown...
