For experts to discuss very technical stuff and newbies to ask why the Spectrum they bought off ebay doesn't work.

Video: A quick unboxing and look at Retro Radionics Omni Desktop 128k

Post by Morcar »

I just put together a quick unboxing and look at Retro Radionics Omni Desktop 128k on Youtube.

More videos will follow on dealing with the machine and what features you can use.

Seems interesting, but it leads us to believe it's a 48K, that in fact it's not :(

Is it a 128K compatible in a small board?
I had a quick look at the website, and it's not clearly obvious on a quick view.

Looks interesting, but the website doesn't show colour options etc.. and it seems no one is answering the comments too! Is this still for sale, and how do you get different coloured versions?

From what I know as I am in contact with Retro Radionics it is for sale and you can ask for certain colours.

Its also a 128k machine with EXSDOS and UnoDOS installed (Just use the dipswitches)

You can also flip it into +2e with the use of the dipswitches too.

Its a 128K Don Superfo design with surface mounted discrete ICs, not a FPGA. Real Z80 and real ULA chips (SLAM128+ by Mark Smith/Piotr Bugaj, supporting ULAplus extended palette). With divMMC, double SD card, twin joystick ports, RGB out, Composite out, HDMI option, power button, reset button and onboard batteries (twin hi-capacity 18650 eCigarette batteries that give about 10 hours per charge - maybe less when they're also powering the laptop screen?).

The colour schemes are exactly the same as the options listed here, plus the chrome options. You would specify them in the special instructions at the time you place your order. Djordje is hand-building each one, so he can take your requirements into consideration, or discuss an alternative if he can't do a certain combination.

Be aware the shipping from China (where Djordje lives) is cheap but slow - 6-8 weeks?

Also be aware the gloss cases are limited editions. They were manufactured first, then at at some point the mould was sandblasted to create the matt textured versions. This is a one-time-only process, so once the stocks of gloss cases run out there will never be any more. He makes laser cuts for the cases to accommodate the extra sockets and buttons. (The cases are also available for people who bought the Spectrum Next board only, and several other boards - all with specific laser cuts for each board.)

The facebook group is more active than the shop. You can always get Djordje's attention there if you need to ask questions.

There is also a laptop version, which is essentially an Omni (in black only) with a TFT screen attached. If you order a laptop now, be aware the Omni will ship without the screen, and the screen will ship later when it is finalised.

Interesting. Could someone describe what is under the hood for someone that knows very little about hardware?
