Disney now co-own the ZX Spectrum. Seriously.

Post by PeteProdge »

Disney's intended purchase of nearly all of 21st Century Fox, and 39% (later, possibly all) of the UK's Sky operation, has been announced.

(Edit: Updated to point out it's only 39% of Sky UK, not all.)

Uh-oh.
Every man should plant a tree, build a house, and write a ZX Spectrum game.

There are two possibilities. It can mean nothing. Or it can mean trouble. I don't know yet what trouble exactly but Disney is infamous for their lawyers and copyrights obsession.

It would be very surprising for them to end the license for emulator ROMs, and it wouldn't really matter if they did anyway at this point.

Wouldn't be fussed if they cracked down on all the cheeky sods selling unlicensed handbags and coffee mugs etc with photos of speccies printed on them ;)

(nothing will change, we had just the same discussions when the Murdoch empire bought Amstrad)

oh great, every game will now be a child that has a parent that has died (or dies on screen/off screen), be an orphan, or disregard the rules from the parent(s) because they think they know better, thus putting themselves in danger/lost/abduction. They will require an "I want" song, that defines the quest of the game, I want that person, those legs, them there diamonds or to see another part of the world. There will be a nasty character that has help from a few dopey henchmen, they too want that thing..... oh sod it. It's Disney, better stay quiet.
Bet they won''t bring Kim Possible back either......

Download everything...

I think Disney mostly bought the Hollywood/non-News parts of Fox. The Murdochs are trying to get full control of Sky, not sell parts of it off.

I was reading more, and it looks like I was completely wrong! Fox has 39% of Sky and is trying to get full control, but whatever they have at the time the acquisition goes through, will go to Disney.

Yeah, Rupert Murdoch is focusing on his newspapers and the news side of things. Hence that lovely impartial and totally accurate Fox News will remain in his hands, along with Fox Sports. Apparently, advertising rates are higher for 'real time' content.

It hasn't looked too likely that Murdoch would have got full control of Sky, what with the phone hacking scandal at the Sun and News Of The World, along with various sex scandals from Fox News people.

Seriously, who gives a crap? If it means no more giving away the zx spectrum brand willy nilly, I'm all for it.

As for game IPs, yeah, not much really, the only real downfall will be refusal of distributing roms, but, meh.

I'll be suprised if anything changes, it'll just be baggage that I'm sure is the real reason they bought fox, for the profit making Sinclair stuffs.
