Timex Sinclair 2068 - The American ZX Spectrum

Post by 4thRock »

Nothing really new for us, but some nice video captures from real hardware (look after 6:50).

Hue is all wrong (a common NTSC problem), aspect ratio is different with a smaller border, and it has "bright black" that shows up as brown!
Interesting if you are into image preservation, paletes, sRGB colours, etc.

Unfortunately he doesn't know very much about the machine. The bright black is not brown -- it is bright black. What has happened is the varactors that control the colour settings have drifted with time and need recalibration.

If I remember Chris Smith's explanation correctly, the "wrong" border size is due to the way NTSC works. I remember noticing it on every single TS2068 I tried over here.

The difference border size between PAL and NTSC is due to the timing differences between the two. At a 60Hz field rate, there is less time so the boarder is smaller compared to a 50Hz field rate.

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb :dance

Are there any games that use Timex Sinclair 2068 extra video modes?

Back in the day, one and probably the only commercial game release to make use of the mode 1 video and also the internal AY sound was Frogger (https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/4 ... ex/Frogger).
Mode 1 is difficult to spot due to the poor graphics, but paying attention you can see there is no color clash.
