Ast A. Moore wrote: Fri Nov 24, 2017 3:00 pm That’s the problem. Many people haven’t played quite a few games, plus some of the games are not unique to the Spectrum. Even if we isolate Spectrum-specific game characters, their use as a form of ranking is arbitrary at best and whimsical at worst.
I don't see what's wrong with whimsical. I'm surprised people are voting for game characters when it's such a wonky list of them though!
Ast A. Moore wrote: Fri Nov 24, 2017 3:00 pm Machine names are (a) unique to the platform, (b) readily recognized by the majority of the members, and (c) have a more direct correlation with ranks (the latter being a function of the number of posts).
Agreed.

Nah it's just a bit of fun :)

It is all a bit meaningless. Post count doesn't really give any indication of community standing, just that someone has probably taken more photos of their lunch and posted it in the OT section than anyone else. Hardly a useful measure.

If the game characters option wins (and I hope it does), open another thread for people's suggestions for one character, then draw them out of a hat, or do a vote to figure out which to include. I don't think the order really matters.

Having said all that the current finger in the wind list and order is fine as far as I am concerned.

Probably a good indication of their state of malnourishment/lardiness though..

Nah, I agree, it's just a bit of fun. I agree with the sentiment that if the games characters win it would be quite good if there were some ZX-specific ones, though I don't really have particular objections to Speccy characters that were ported to other machines. Also I didn't mind some of the WoS ones like "Elite" and stuff which was fine.

You mean life?

I'm cool with whatever wins. Let's see where we are next Friday, it doesn't seem fair that if #3 wins then people like yourself don't get the list they voted for.

No, don’t be silly. It’s 42.

Start with Micro, and just append "Willy" to it, as in the character from MM/JSW. It's progression, it's Speccy-centric.

Surely you can't be suggesting that having the highest post count on a forum is some sort of childish dick waving contest? :o

Maybe we should consider a completely different system. Maybe one based on how useful each persons introduction post is? Or failing that, how many letters (characters) long their post is...

Times the number of odd hours in a day before the post was made, minus the number of vowels in the poster’s nick name squared. Hey, I think we’re onto something here!

Was it not Socrates that said the path to enlightenment was strewn with rubble and dogdoo?

Anybody know of a hack to manipulate poll results? Asking for a friend.

Last bump.

Poll closes tomorrow 12.00 UTC.

Looks like a close one, the berks currently have it.

Oh bloody hell, 13 all, it's never simple is it. I'm sure you lot do it on purpose.

If it's still a draw at midday UTC let's give it another week.

If it's still a draw then....dunno.

In case of final draw we might ask for a qualified vote, a casting vote.

Does anyone know Clive Sinclair's email?

Ahh! The wonderful world of community democracy
Admins make a decision and divide the community, and those who are upset shout out at the Admins because they are wrong.
So, you give the community the choice, and instead it equally divides itself...

Welcome to the world of being wrong!

I don't recognise this description of events. Looks more like you're itching to draw parallels that aren't there to me.
