Private messages

Post by Ralf »

Would there be any chance to increase number of private messages that a forum user may receive?

I find the current number of 50 messages much too small. I have exceeded this number and have to delete messages to receive new messages. I really hate doing it, each of these messages has some personal value to me ;)

Hi Ralf

It's something I will consider, but it's about server space and trying to avoid having to pay more for hosting than we do already.

Can you not copy the text or do screen grabs?

What sort of number were you wanting.

I’m with Ralf on this one.

Considering that PMs are (technically) no different than regular forum posts, and their number is much smaller, I don’t think we need to put a limit on them, strictly speaking. I mean, storage-wise the increase will be negligible.

Hi Ast A. Moore

Please see above. I've increased it by 20%

If it becomes an issue in the future let me know.

I would always make a backup of private messages that are important to you.

PeterJ I understand your worries about server space but aren't these private messages just short text? How much space does an average message take? 200 bytes? 400 bytes? So 200 messages would be less than 100 kB. Let's suppose we have 1000 forums users, that would mean 100 MB for all these messages. Is it a significant server space in 2019?

It seems to me that it isn't but maybe I'm missing something???

And yes, I can make copies of these messages in Notepad or so. actually I'll have to start doing that, I guess ;)

Please see above. I've increased it for you (and all users). I will monitor things and try and find what space is used, but if you have issues contact me again

This is why email >> private messages. You can archive as many as you want for the rest of time without any reliance on the website in question even continuing to exist.

Indeed you can never guarantee an online resource will always be there. If something is that important to you maintain an offline copy.

Actually very true. I remember that we lost all our private messages on WOS when Lee migrated forum engine to another one.

And I'll tell you more. Maybe I'm ageing, obsolete man ;) but I completely don't get this current trend of holding all your important files in some "cloud", on some online service which can disappear any day without any notice and which is managed by some anonymous guys who have access to my data even if they claim they don't. I just prefer having everything on my hard drive + 2 or so backup copies.

I agree Ralf

When I'm away from home things like Dropbox are really useful for magazines and music, but I wouldn't use them as my backup solution.

Having said that I've got a twin drive NAS at home, but if that got stolen I would loose everything so I need to buy a portable backup unit I can leave at an alternative location

On the bottom left in the messages section there is an export facility. That’s what I use to back-up messages.
Once I am happy that I have a back-up, I can then delete any I don’t want from the forum. And yes, I know that the export is not as good as the in-context message on the forum.

Doh, I misread that is an exploit facility. So disappointed now.

I've had a couple of questions from users about PMs they have sent being 'stuck' in their outbox. These messages stay in the outbox until the recipient has opened them.

I hope that clarifies things.
