NSFW games

People are still making stuff for the Sinclair related machines. Tell us about new games and other software that runs on the Spectrum, ZX80/ZX81, Pentagon and Next.

NSFW games

Post by Fahnn »

So, I've been writing a new game. It's a broadly speaking a management simulation. Even though it's only in BASIC, it runs fast enough and I'm really proud of the amount of stuff I've crammed in. I wrote it for myself to play, but I'd love to make it more widely available, because I think other people might enjoy playing it too.

The trouble is, it's based on you running a studio making porn films. I've got all the mainstream porn stuff in there, which is absolutely no problem, but I have options to go into...other areas. It can get very extreme and even though it's entirely text-based, it's extremely NSFW (it's actually NSFAS, AS being 'any situation'). I was going to put a play-through video on Youtube to attempt to get some feedback, but I think even doing that might be borderline illegal (due to the potential content), so I've not bothered (yet).

I've been thinking of keeping this for myself and making another version that focuses on mainstream films, but it would mean rewriting all the dialogue (and there's a lot of that). That might be fun, and I'll probably do it at some point, but for the moment, I'm unsure what to do with this one. Perhaps it could be made available and just see if anything happens (at the worst, everyone here would think that I was an insane pervert, but I can live with that). Any advice would be appreciated!

Well, I suppose that a game about porn industry is not everybody's cup of tea.

On the other hand we have similar games on Spectrum like Paradise Cafe, Sex Crime, Soho Quest or even Samantha Fox Strip Poker and they surely have their fans ;)

My advice? Try to keep it funny, not explicit and vulgar. Something similar to Rockstar Ate My Hamster.

And well... maybe think of adding some pictures?

Sounds like something bumfun gaming would be interested in publishing.

It's hard to say without actually seeing it, but there are loads of adult games out there, and as long as this doesn't massively cross any lines then I reckon you should make it available. Is it done with pervy intent (to arouse), or does it have a satirical edge? With your consent it could (probably) be preserved in ZXDB.

Oh, it's entirely satirical, it's not erotic in any way at all! It's quite serious and businesslike, really. It's just a management game, but with a slightly unusual theme. It's just that some of the stuff in it is so deliberately ridiculously offensive (and occasionally disturbing) that I think that it's not really something that should be freely available.

If it's a good game, please release it!

Although adult titles added to ZXDB won't be available at Spectrum Computing, they usually appear later at other sites such as ZX-Art.

It's not quite finished yet, as I keep thinking of bits and pieces to add (or change) and I've still got 1,500 bytes free which must be used (I have a pathological dislike of not using all the memory). But I think that when it is done, I'll probably just keep it quiet.

Actually, this whole thread has just been an excuse to plant the seed that such a transgressive game exists and if nobody's actually played it, then people's imaginations can run riot as to the heights of tastelessness that it scales. It's my Mire Mare. A text-based, porn-themed Mire Mare.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on this, it's been genuinely helpful. When the game's finished I'll make some sort of decision as to availability.

But anyway I need to start work on my new game, "John Torode's Masterchef Challenge Featuring Gregg Wallace". Some sample dialogue:

John: Trevor's taking a real risk with this fricassee plum chicken dish. And custard? I'm not sure. It could be amazing, but if he forgets to cook the chicken it's gonna be a DISAAAAASTER!

Gregg: I can't WAIT to get my lips around Trevor's plums!

etc.

By the way, have you noticed that this forum is censored? I typed the title without * ;)

Yes, Ralf

There are a handful of words that Dave and I agreed to censor via the features already built into phpBB (The forum software). It just makes moderation easier.

Oh god I hadn't seen that one, thank you! Although I'm now trawling Youtube for others I've not seen and that's going to take valuable time away from thinking of ridiculous things for Gregg Wallace to say. Damn you.

Still think the Apprentice one might be the best:

I never bought into the whole Spectrum vs. Commodore thing. Some of my mates had Spectrums, some had 64s, so I got to play pretty much everything. Some games were better on the Spectrum, some were better on the 64. Both machines had their pros and cons.

Whilst my first love will always be the Spectrum, I actually bought a second-hand C64 for £40 from a very dodgy-looking shop in the Metro Centre in 1989, just so that I could play games on it. So I guess I swing both ways.

This thread's gone in some interesting directions, hasn't it?

I still remember when I was at school my best friends family were rather affluent and he had a Commodore 64, the official monitor and 1541 disk drives. I remember the first time I heard the sound in Raid Over Moscow, it was just amazing! At the time I had a 1K ZX81!

I prefer the graphics on the Spectrum, but not much beats the 64 for sound.

Heartily concur with that. The Spectrum colours, although limited, are just so much more attractive than the colour palette of the C64. And a lot of graphics on the 64 could look blocky next to the Spectrum version of the same thing.

But yeah, the SID chip was something else. It has a unique sound, even today. I remember buying a couple of budget titles (Mastertronic, I think) purely because Rob Hubbard did the music. I saw a compilation cassette of some of his Commodore themes in a computer shop about 30 years ago and I wish I'd bought it now (I know that they're all available on the internet but it would have been a nice artefact of the time).

'Scunthorpe'.

P.S. The subscriber edition of Retro Gamer this month comes with a CD of Rob Hubbard tracks.
