New software 2018

People are still making stuff for the Sinclair related machines. Tell us about new games and other software that runs on the Spectrum, ZX80/ZX81, Pentagon and Next.

Tea-Leaf Ted:

It's a platformer made with AGD. Try yourself if you like it.
There are actually two different versions/releases of this game where you play a different protagonist, but that's the only difference:

Cheers, it will be in next weekend's update (i.e not the current one).

Aye that's one of Jamie's charming little flourishes, Knight Tricks had a Black and a White version.

Two games from Poland, released on "speccy.pl party 2018.1", an event which happened on 2018-04-14

1.
Gem Slider:

As you can see it's a puzzle. If I understand it correctly, you must build lines of 5 stones which makes them disappear. Random stones are constantly thrown on the board. You make a move by selecting a stone and pointing a destination field. A games checks if there is path from start field to destination field. The path doesn't need to be straight, it can have many turns but you cannot move on diagonals or jump over existing stones. I suppose it never ends, it's generally a thing how long can you survive.

I believe it belongs to "color lines" genre. Try typing into search field "color lines" to see some similar games. Maybe we should create such group in a database? ;)

2.
Fro

No, it's not a Spectrum display after some crash, it's a game ;)
It's actually a Frogger clone made entirely on attributes. You see this frog and cars, right? We had here recently Snake made on attributes so maybe it's some kind of new fashion ;)

Great puzzle game, quite polished, managed 175 so far.

The only downside is that the 'lock on Gem' key response is a bit unreliable.

Now ^this^ is superb! Despite its simple appearance this plays better than almost every frogger in the archive, I like the debounced key control. Try as I might I just can't get the 4th Frog in yet :x

The recent game Knights:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=32308

got version 2.0

From Facebook:

KNIGHTS v2.0 - now in machine code! http://www.clounagh.com/temp/Knights.rar

This is a brand new version of the game (which was originally in BASIC), recreated from scratch in Z80. New features:
- Levels load at lightning speed.
- Improved cursor movement, with diagonals possible.
- Some graphical improvements.

I remember Darryl’s series on Z80 assembly, I even gave him a few pointers. This game is solid. He’s a quick learner. Really happy for him!

Crikey it was already polished. I only played a few levels of version 1 but I didn't even consider that pressing BREAK was an option!

Cheers.

Cheers Ralf, and that brings the tally up to 50 new games (that we know about) so far.

Image

36% AGD games (including 1 PGD)
8% Churros

There was a spike in January due to the ZX-Dev contest, yielding 21 quality games.

This is very interesting information. Have you thought about producing a quick report twice a year showing the status of the homebrew on the Spectrum?

Yep I'd be happy to. Hopefully it will come to mind in the middle of the year, and I will do one for the Woot! End of year tape magazine (there is such a report in the 2017 Woot).

I started this thread hoping to convince someone with the relevant skills to query ZXDB and produce something more in depth but no takers so far.

Awesome! I have too many things on my hands right now, but I'll be around. I'm already using the ZXInfo API for some basic queries, and I want to go deeper.

TANK-1990

New game from Russia, it's from 2018, despite the name ;)

and the original thread at zx.pk.ru:

Inspired by Battle City from NES, like many other similar Russian games.

Looks great and plays well. Why is it 128K only? It doesn't have AY.

Two new games from Russia:

Lost In the Worlds
Image

Game site
https://nihirash.itch.io/lost-in-worlds

and thread on Russian forum if anybody interested:
http://zx-pk.ru/threads/29246-moya-mini ... words.html

Feels like Manic Miner clone, yet the difficulty is even more hardcore than the original ;)

Written with PGD designer (yes, PGD and not AGD ;) )

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Rogue
Image

Download in the thread at Russian forum:
http://zx-pk.ru/threads/29242-rogue.html

The game genre is, I would say, turn based strategy. You move your warrior through the maze and every your move means one move
of your enemies. You kill enemies, collect health, weapons and treasure and progress to next levels through exits.

First levels don't give any chalenge but maybe later it becomes a true game???

It seems like a Basic game with UGD graphics but for Basic game with UGD graphics it's quite polished in my opinion.

The author claims, it's not final version and that he wants to rewrite it but I'll share it here anyway as it's generally complete game.

Cheers.

Lost in Worlds is great, a very short, mad platformer. Also contains a couple of nods to the best platform game in the history of the Universe ;)

Infy lives: 35332,182

Can be completed quite easily without cheats, as long as you can pass level 2

Rogue:

Looks like a new author to ZXDB (?). I've inputted him as "Shynni", Ralf can you confirm that's correct?

Not really correct, R-Tape
Transliteration is correct but he's not the author.
Игра сделана на основе NOMAM14_Basic_Tenliner_Contest, автор Jakub Debski.
which means: game inspired by NOMAM14_Basic_Tenliner_Contest, author Jakub Debski
So the author is Jakub Debski and while I don't know him, it's 100% Polish name.

Not sure about Basic Tenliner Contest but I believe it can be this thing below. In that case it was some competition for 8 BIt Atari and this game is a port from Atari:

https://books.google.pl/books?id=T5zFBg ... ue&f=false

EDIT: I would also adjust the author of Lost in Worlds. Pinny is his nickname on zx.pk.ru but on his own website he uses a nick Nihirash!

Guys, you got it all wrong )

The author of this particular game is Александр Шарихин (Alexander Sharihin). His nicknames are "pinny" and "Nihirash!". That's his twitter: https://twitter.com/nihirash

The original game (by Jakub Debski) was made in BASIC for some Atari compo. I did not manage to run it, but is looks not exactly like Alexander's game. So it's just inspiration.

And Shiny (Шынни, Дмитрий Крапивин, Dmitry Krapivin) is the other author - he made Rogue and Beams of Light.

If I search for Dmitry Krapivin under author it also brings up Bye, V3nom! by goblinish.

Are Dmitry Krapivin, Shiny, goblinish, g0blinish all the same person?
