Psion Chess

Whether it's Mire Mare or a BASIC tape you found in the attic, it needs to be preserved digitally. Post here and experts can help to do so.

Psion Chess

Post by CaptainKrenon »

It seems that there are several versions of this game:

1. The tape version from Psion for the Spectrum 48K.

2. Another tape version from Psion for the Spectrum 48K. Note the colours (and the option to change them) and the clock on top of the board. Same loading screen as the previous one.

3. The cartridge version for the Spectrum 16K and 48K. Looks identical to #2, but with a different default colour set.

4. The Mikro-Gen versions (published as "Masterchess"). There's three releases. The first two look identical to each other and very similar to the cartridge version (the clock is replaced with the "Mikro-Gen" label).

The third one looks almost exactly the same as the cartridge version ("Move 1" vs "Move 01").

5. The tape version for the Timex 2068. Looks identical to #1

6. The cartridge version for the Timex 2068. Looks identical to the Spectrum cartridge version (#3).

Psion's versions #1 and #3 are available here: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php?cat=96&id=914

The Mikro-Gen versions are here: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=3057

And the Timex versions are here: https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... id=4000014

However I haven't found #2 anywhere on the archive, although I have a TZX file myself and this is actually the version that I originally owned back in the day. Does anyone know more about it?

Ye gods! I have three Psion Chess tapes. I'll have to check them all, now.

Right, the funny thing is that I have the TZX of version #2 (the one with red and green squares) from an old dump of WoS, but I cannot find it there anymore. So it must have been removed at some point.

That's the version that I had on tape, but I don't have the tape here with me to check it now.

This is the only game I have on RAM cartridge for Sinclair interface two. It plays ok.

Is there any chance to find the original source codes of the strongest Speccy chess programs, namely Super Chess 3.5/Clock Chess and Cyrus II?
