Sinclair & Sam Computing Issue 5

Whether it's Mire Mare or a BASIC tape you found in the attic, it needs to be preserved digitally. Post here and experts can help to do so.

Sinclair & Sam Computing Issue 5

Post by damieng »

Just managed to get this scanned in (at 600dpi) and converted into a PDF.

The cleaned-up JPG files for each page are zipped up into https://mega.nz/#!BIo3SbTI!0VwmYJfSBE2C ... FRcy_jR9U8

Alternatively a PDF of Issue 5 is available at https://mega.nz/#!4c4VFAAb!3G0e1UurpGwP ... Axz0qeNF8I

Issues 1-4 are on WOS although 1-3 have some missing pages and are all marked as low-resolution so I might re-do them.

Also have some issues of the predecessor S&SC - +3 Contact - none of which are currently online (annoying I was hoping to find the issues I don't have).

Have some more MIA bits I'm going through - will post them up separately.

That's brilliant. I have been looking for this. I think there should be one or 2 more issues. Does anyone know if they have been confirmed to exist?

I have issues 1-5 which is all that were ever created as well as a single issue of +3 Contact which preceded this and my scanner is plugged in as I've been archiving some issues of Format.

Wish I could find the other issues of +3 Contact and/or "The +3 Technical Manual" that Daniel Garner also published.

*Edit: apparently that's all the issues of Format.

While it's great they exist somewhere, the scans are rather low-resolution and you can't download a PDF (and each image contains two pages so you can't even manually download them and assemble them into a PDF).

No idea how you'd read these on an ebook reader. I might just go ahead and continue with my PDF 600dpi scans. (I only have vol.6, vol.7 and vol.1 tho)

I've uploaded the final issue (number 5) of Sinclair & SAM Computing to archive.org at https://archive.org/details/sinclair-sam-computing-5

I have the other four issues I can upload this week. There were 18 issues of +3 Contact which are MIA - I did have issue 18 but now I can't find it. Will keep looking.

Also reading through this magazine there's a few other things that are MIA:

- Music Writer by Garry Rowland (heavily promoted in issue 5)
- MIDI extension for Music Writer
- Compiler extension for Music Writer
- 3 "sets" of Music Writer demos (presumably 3 tapes/disks) - no entry either
- Plus 3 Technical Source (republication of +3 Contact articles. At least Part 1 of this should have been published as it was available for order. I doubt Parts 2 and 3 were ever completed as they were after Issue 5). Not only MIA but no entry for it either.

There were also 10 disks of public domain available (and 9 more for CP/M +3). I still have my entries around here somewhere but was never sure if they qualified for the archives. I probably also have a bunch of the other ones including a bunch of Brian Gaff's titles. Some of this stuff appeared on Outlet from time to time as well like the +3 Format 208K and Defrag by Chris Pile.

I've scanned and uploaded a few more:

- Sinclair & SAM Computing Issue 1
- +3 Contact Issue 17
- +3 Contact Issue 18

I've got S&SC issues 2, 3 and 4 left to scan then I'm out of material.

Thanks so much for this. That was a major blast from the past - I'd completely forgotten about S≻ I was a subscriber back in the day and it's amazing how much of it comes flooding back when I look at it. I can't remember how I would have discovered this magazine in the first place though - did they ever advertise in the mainstream mags like Crash or YS? Those adverts for Kobrahsoft really got the nostalgia going,I remember sending off for most of their catalogue. DICE in particular was one of my favourites on my +3, I spent hours fiddling around with it.

If you do have any of the PD disks lying around and can convert them to DSK format I'd love to see them. I remember I really wanted the whole set and ordered them, but the company went out of business and the magazine ceased publication before they could send me them (teenage me was particularly gutted at this!)

Thanks again for the trip down memory lane!

You may well of heard of it from New Computer Express - he had coverage in the Speccy column there from time to time while it was still the +3 Users Group (that's how I joined) and then got switched over to S&SC. I basically got 2 issues of +3 Contact then 5 issues of S&SC and then hey went bust.

Even before they went bust PD disks were unreliable and getting sent back. The publisher jumped around a lot and seemed to have his finger in so many pies. Every issue was talking about new projects, new magazines, new features even when the magazine was stills struggling with print quality and meeting any kind of regular schedule and features disappeared without a trace.

I have many of the individual titles listed in the PD list between some from him and a tape full of stuff from Speccy Sector PD which I transferred to disk. I'm going to create a separate thread where we put all the PD lists in together and start un-MIA'ing them. Some of them also appeared on issues of OUTLET.

If you find any previous issues of +3 Contact please dig them out and scan them - or chuck them my way if you don't have access to a decent scanner/don't want the hassle.

Issue 2 just finished uploading as well - it's currently generating the PDFs etc. https://archive.org/details/sinclair-sam-computing-2

For anyone coming to this thread with issues of +3 Contact from 1 to 16 please scan them - if you don't have the time/equipment let me know and I'll scan them for you!

Thanks for that.

+3 Contact issues 1-16 are actually MIA and those archive.org links won't work. All others are OK.

I know. ZXDB doesn't keep track of individual links, there's only a generic "mask" for each magazine. So it doesn't know which links currently work or not.

It means the other links will automatically work if/when you add the other missing magazine numbers, as long as you keep following the same naming convention.
