A lot of those more modern ones were terrible. I had the Sonic the Hedgehog one and it was bad.

The Space Harrier 2 could be OK, judging by all those road-race games, but they've tried to put 2 alternate obstacles (one solid, one shootable enemy) approaching each of the six positions the player can be in, which makes it impossible to judge what's actually going to hit you.
