island vacation

Post by MrPixel »

you have won an all expense paid vacation to Hawaii BUT you are only allowed one computer.

your options:
1. Windows 98 ME
2. Commodore vic 20
3. TRS 80
4. Amstrad CPC
5. Coleco ADAM (cannot use on plane or you will die)
6. Atari 800 XL

however, you cannot take a disk drive or printer. tape drives are fine however.

also, you're stuck with a 2400 bps dial up

I don't really understand the question? Can I have a monitor or TV? In present times what use is the Internet connection unless I have a Windows machine.

So the answer is the Windows machine, and you could emulate all the others, although I would probably use the PC in the hotel lobby!

PS - WIndows ME and Windows 98 are different.

PPS - Obviously the machine you left out is the ZX Spectrum

What specs are the PC with Win 98? - I'm running a 1.3ghz Celeron with Win98 + 512mb SD Ram, onboard graphics, 200gb IDE hard drive and it's pretty damn fast. Can we have emulators on the PC?
Anyway, the holiday is in Hawaii, once I've sorted my passport/visas, I'll sod the computer and use the limited time for some sight seeing. Oh, and watch out for the the volcano ash/lava! Can I take anyone with me?

emulators require an internet connection. the computer already has solitaire and a few games pre-installed but no internet.

Would the modem be using V.22bis or 201A protocols?

Why do you need the internet to be able to use emulators? Just install them off a CD.

:?: It still wouldn't take more than a few minutes to read them. Even if the CD was completely full of emulators, it would take at most only 80 minutes.

I'd choose the PC, the only valid option for me, and if I could choose the preinstalled games, Wolfestein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D, Monkey Island, UFO Enemy Unknown, Doom and Lakers vs Celtics.

Only Solitaire is a boring option! :D

You told us in the first post that we do have an internet connection. It's slow, but what most of us lived with in the days of dial up.

Don't forget to put 3D Space Cadet Pinball on the PC as well.

V.22bis connects to the internet in French not English.

The PC seems the obvious choice as you can emulate everything else on it.

No need for internet, you just find someone in Hawaii with the emulators and files and serial link.

From punch cards.

Sounds rather a lot like a situation in which no computer at all would be blissful.

I just managed a fortnight in Zakynthos filming Loggerhead Turtles and eating in some great (and one mediocre) restaurants without any of these. Admittedly I did get whacked for a data overrun on my phone but I think I could cope without games on a free holiday in Hawaii. All I'd really want is my battered old Panasonic FT-25, apnea mask and a monofin. OK, OK, and some shorts...

(So long as I wasn't stuck in the usual crap-hole traps flooded by American tourists).
