Little bugs in the database 2

Post by Ralf »

This game:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=12745

I've recently made a rzx recording for it (check Rzx Archive) and while doing it I examined this game a little bit.

It's is made with G.A.C.

In the comment for Bandersnatch, the name "Brataccas" is wrongly spelt (twice) as "Brattacus".

Counting Cats from Sinclair User is listed in ZXDB as for the 16K Spectrum, looking at the magazine it specifically says 48K

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=9061

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/mag.php ... 28&page=67

It's not typed in yet, but I plan to do it.

The entry for the Death Pit & Doom Pit compilation lists a screenshot map which is unrelated to both titles.

The language for this never realeased game most likely would have been english, as the C64 version had, which was released:

Spitfire 40 + Strike Force Harrier

is not published by Alternative, but their Again Again label (source: big round Again Again logo on the cover)

Pluggit

year of release should be 1983, rather than 1984 - the loading screen says 1983 and it was advertised in C&VG in 11/83.

Shadow Skimmer

The re-release on MicroValue should be removed. The Micro Selection was The Edge's budget label.

Periscope Up

The re-release by Cult Games seems to be an error - they only ever re-released D&H games, not Atlantis'.

Agent Orange

Like CORE, Xeno and Wibstars, this was "published" by A&F and "marketed" by Argus - there is no separate release from Argus Press.

Karnov

There aren't separate releases from Electric Dreams and Activision, just Electric Dreams (who are owned by Activision).

Poltergeist

Claims to be from Firebird according to the loading screen, but there's no evidence that it ever was.

The three text adventures ascribed to the publisher Bass-On were not published by them, er, me. Bass-On was just a pen name I used when writing games. My games were only ever published by Zenobi. I'm assuming it was actually Zenobi for Mark Cantrell's Project Nova too, but cannot say for certain.

Hi Jason, nice to see you on here. The Bass-On label is odd, especially when applied to Mark's game, but seems to have come over from the original database on WOS.

I would suggest that the original publisher for Mark's Project Nova should actually be Nebula Designs, as with his other games, as he self-published before they were later picked up by Zenobi.

Edit: I've updated the information at CASA too. (Always nice to hear from fellow Zenobi adventure authors... John Wilson is still around... and he's recently been programming new games too! The updated version of Deek's Deeds sounds interesting by the way... There is still a lot of interest in old text adventures... You may like to check out http://classicadventurer.co.uk )

Thanks dude. I do still keep an eye out to see what John's up to. Cheers for the link to classicadventurer - I've just read the interview with John so far, but looks like lots more of interest in there. I did find a load of Spectrum stuff in the loft at my Mum's house the other week, including a few letters from John. It looks like I did send him the updated version of Deek's Deeds all those years ago, but he'd already duplicated a load of tapes and leaflets of the original version that he needed to get shot of first! :D

This Polish game is under category "Adventure Game: Text-Only"

07 Zglos Sie

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=25358

It clearly fits better under "Adventure Game: Text/Illustrated"

By the way you cannot distinguish between these categories in the search engine currently:

There are two Blades in Russia:
https://zxart.ee/eng/authors/p/plaid - Alexander Rakitin, participated in making of Numb Cars.
https://zxart.ee/eng/authors/b/blade1 - Sergey Sirotenko, made other games

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... l_id=16606 - kakietochelysamstrada is not a real author :))) It's translated as "Some guys from Amstrad"

Bomber Bob in Pentagon Capers
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php?cat=96&id=623

is inspired by Bomb Jack (the arcade game). It is actually an earlier game than the official Spectrum conversion of Bomb Jack

Runaway Robot - https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 96&id=4274 says Maximum Player 1, but you can play with 2 players alternated.

Yes, the mention of Blade in Numb Cars seems an error.
Also, Marbles - https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=12937 is Copyright Blade Software Inc (company), but Sergey Sirotenko actually participated on the development as Blade (nickname)

Winter Games by US Gold.

According to the database, it belongs to the 'Summergames' series, in position 3, after Summer Games I and II.

The question is the games in a series are placed in chronological order, so Winter Games should be in position 1, as it was released in 1986 whereas Summer Games I and II were released in 1988. World Games and California Games are from 1987 and their order is also wrong.

They're in the correct order in terms of their original release - Summer Games is first because it was released on the C64 in 1984 - they were just converted in the wrong order.

Raw Battle:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=34453

is inspired by "Soylent Green" movie:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070723/?r ... f_=nv_sr_1

The Soylent is mentioned in the game intro:

Acro Jet
originally published by US Gold, not Microprose
(source: US Gold logo on back of cover, US Gold adverts, reviews saying US Gold)

Silent Service
also originally published by US Gold
(source: mort's scans on the Internet Archive - "manufactured under licence from Microprose by US Gold" and the inside of the inlay which is full of adverts for other US Gold games)

This is for the original releases in the double jewel cases - Microprose later re-released both titles in card boxes.

Przedsiebiorstwo Zagraniczne:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.p ... 6&id=23906

The title is wrong. "Przedsiebiorstwo Zagraniczne" means "foreign company" and is a part of publisher name which is
"Przedsiebiorstwo Zagraniczne 'Polmer" - "Foreign Company 'Polmer' ":

Image

So what's the title? Actually I would say it's a compilation which name appears on the loading screen. It's called "Programy Uzytkowe Zestaw U-02" - "Utility programs. Collection U-02":
Image

And there are 3 programs in the compilation:

- Assembler Z80
- Disassembler Z80
- Monitor Z80
