And sorry about my initial syntax confusion, I've now downloaded MariaDB, imported ZXDB and am throwing some queries that actually work at it. My initial query should have been:

Sorry. I didn't phrase myself very well. You were correct in the beginning: Two words. Each word starting with the same letter.

e.g. Atic Atac, Dynamite Dan, Clumsy Colin, Devil's Descent, Magic Meanies...

Now a search for the above would include some titles that start with the same letter, but are not alliterative (as you say, it's about sounds, not letters—so Cheddar Cheese is alliterative, but Cheddar Colin is not). That doesn't matter, because there will only be a small number of such examples.

No, case sensitivity is removed by using upper on both. The problem is the dodgy specs about the last letter, which you have now declared irrelevant. So you just need:

But I see that this is returning lots of false positives since all titles that start with The T* are now also included. I'll just remove the part after the comma from the library_title - one moment.

No, upper is a function that takes a mixed case string and returns that in upper case. By applying upper to both left and right parts of the comparison you are effectively ignoring case.

And while looking at other functions on the MariaDB syntax page, I stumbled across the soundex function, this may be more what you are after:

I don't think the soundex function is helping; the letter only search before it was closest. I've just gone through the non-soundex search and separated them out manually. Of the 1061 alliterative titles, I picked 1015 as alliterative, and removed 45 (and I seem to have lost one title somewhere!).
