I think you actually nailed it, on how to defined the essence or identity of the Spectrum.
How about people with B&W TVs or wrong video connections (quite common in the East)? So i don't think it's about the colors but rather how they were used - sparingly, rarely more than one per moving object, giving Spectrum games distinct clean, poster-like appearance.

Second thing was diversity of the graphics. Doing everything in software meant less restrictions for the programmer aside CPU speed concerns. So even if the frame rate might be inconsistent and less colors used in the playfield, Spectrum games usually had more moving objects of any sizes and shapes, with any overlap order instead of defined layers, and often with more frames of animation than c64 or atari counterparts. And it's another reason i consider new consoleish features inappropriate.

Most of the greatest classic speccy games are great as they are. However some were great but also had big problems. Usually a distinct lack of colour to avoid clash or really jarring scrolling. Boulderdash anyone?

One of my most loved games on the Speccytrump is Quazatron.

Create that with smooth scrolling, nicer colours, more level variety and range of robots/weapons/parts (so deeper levels to each world) and i'd be in heaven. If someone gave me a NEXT too :)
I don't have anything cool to put here, so i'll just be off now to see a priest with yeast stuck between his teeth and his friend called Keith who's a hairpiece thief...

Ahahaha oh wow, that's a good one
Spoiler
But, come to think of it, I suppose there's the 'trick devs into adding another useless feature because you're bad and lazy' sorta thing.

I would like to see Freescape engine/interpreter taking advantage of faster CPU, new instructions and multicolor mode.

RMartins wrote: Thu Aug 06, 2020 12:47 pm The next brought some, but not all of this, as far as I know:
..
- be able to scroll/clip the memory buffer by hardware (saves CPU and would keep the color blocks/clash aligned within scroll offset).
- have a second video layer (by default transparent), capable of each pixel having it's own color, so no color clash on this layer.
..
Both of these things were implemented.

The ula can be hardware scrolled by pixel, preserving the colour clash boundaries as expected. The ula also implements the timex modes which pixel scroll as well.

The second video layer with each pixel having its own colour is called layer 2. It's a plain bitmap layer that is normally transparent.

Why are you still here?

Spectrum:

3.5MHz / 6144 = 569.66 cycles per byte per second

ZX Next:

28MHz / 49152 = 569.66 cycles per byte per second
28MHz / 81920 = 341.79 cycles per byte per second

As colour resolution rises so do the requirements on the cpu. There are many tricks available but not just in the software this time.

Why do you misuse the name 'ZX Spectrum'?

Pretty sure that's just based off this week's settings for the 'hardware emulator'. :) And of course, all this must be wildly relevant for the kind of guys that ordinarily clear the screen using a FOR..NEXT loop, have easy DMA and god knows what else.

Can I request that we remember to play nice. Set a positive tone. It's OK to compare A to B but remember that behind any game, project, video, etc, there's a person. Let's keep the tone friendly and our participation here relaxing

Are you ok?

All you do is insult, make personal attacks and generate ad hominem rhetoric. There is no content in what you say, there is no interest in discussion. You're not "winning" anything.

Do you even know why you are so angry that you feel the need to act out and belittle others? Does a faster cpu threaten your hold on l33t code? Are 1970s peripherals illegal for spectrum computers? How dare anyone add sd cards, more than 2 AYs (two is ok as it's been done in Russia I assume), how dare anyone imagine an architecture past 1982 without consulting your mighty self?

Look, I get you're some kind of zealot. It's not really rational what you're saying or doing. The insults are not on and make you look infantile.
