Space captain names

Post by R-Tape »

There's probably a generator somewhere online for such a request, but it won't have a Speccy leaning. Say I wanted to make an unashamedly blatant clone of a space shooter like Cybernoid or R-Type, and needed a name for the pilot of the spacecraft, what should it be? The best I can do so far is:

Benedict Spaceclutch.

Benedict suggests a refined character, probably educated at Oxford or Cambridge, could have captained England's first eleven were he not predisposed to fight an undefined alien threat.

Spaceclutch suggests a square jaw, a tough demeanour, and a no nonsense attitude to a hostile alien empire.

Any other suggestions? Male or Female protagonists?

I'd really like to help but I'm afraid a language barrier may be too much here for me.

Can't never be sure if something that sounds cool to me would sound cool to native English speaker too.

I'll give you an example. We have a pop singer in Poland who uses a stage name Margaret. It sounds all right to everybody in Poland. But I've read that in UK you would associate the name Margaret with an old lady ;) So sorry, no international career for our girl ;)

I may not use it but I'd still be interested in a good Polish space captain. It's not essential that he plays for England's first eleven :D

As it happens I love the name Margaret! It is becoming old fashioned in the UK but it's not as 'out of date' as Doreen or Enid. Mind you any of these would be very tongue cheek names for a space hero...

I'm not afraid to risk looking foolish

A Polish female space captain:

Ola Kamien.

Forename apparently means 'defender of mankind', surname = stone. Sounds a bit spacy to an English ear.

Any space videogame whose main character has Mortimer as first name would only be a true hit.

That's not a heroic space captain! That's the baddy!

Dasha Blitzen glowers down at the masses from her citadel, takes a sip of erzatzkaffee and looks in the mirror. The schlager scar over her right eye reminds her of battles won and battles yet to come.

Geeky as a first name, possibly as a surname:

Rosco Mortimer, tough, uncompromising space commando with a good head on his broad shoulders.

How about Second-World-War RAF nicknames?

Algy
Ginger
Dinghy
Gilly
Hoppy
Jumbo
Lofty
Spud
Strafer
Stuffy
Titch
Tubby
Willie

The first two are from the Biggles books, the rest are real.

Okay, I'll try

Good male name for space captain:

John
James
Earl
Kirk
Burt
Hugh
Mortimer (as you said sounds very noble)
Jason (rather younger and cool type of guy)

You could also try something Latin like Horatio,Cassius, Maximus etc.

This thread reminds me of the "butch" space "hero" in the complete carp that is Space Mutiny.

The Mystery Science Theater guys went to town on nicknames for him.
