A user on Facebook (Nicholas Stone) has just released a scan of the above book. I got a copy of this last year (from the Oxfam online book store) and took in on holiday earlier this year. Its the first book that has made assembly language 'click' for me and I found it really readable with lots of great examples. It does have a few typos, but if you are a beginner I would really recommend it.

Its available here:

This title won't be appearing in our archive because of the files size but I will see if we can get it hosted elsewhere and link to it. Grab it quick if you want it!

I am usually pretty tough on the old specy books for being pants but this one is nice. It is the ying to the yang of 'machine code for absolute beginners' in terms of usefulness/readability.

I figure you use this along with 'the complete machine code tutor' then by the end you are ready to move on to stuff like Zacks and Lance L's books and really cause some damage.

I think whoever prepared this put a lot of work into making it useful and understandable. Another win for Pan books!

I love the yellowing of the pages in the scan!
Very authentic! :)

Nice. I was a bit sceptical of this book at first, but it’s been getting a good vibe. Thanks!

By the way, Personal Computer News was a cracking weekly magazine in the 80s. Far more glossy than the others. It started focusing on business machines, but soon moved onto micros. KenD has scanned them.all on his RetroPDF site. Well worth a download. There is also plenty of Spectrum content if you are willing to search for it.

Just found this thread. I'm the original poster of that book. It is a good one. It's funny how the book is in perfect condition, just happens to be yellow!! Maybe I should retrobrite it....

I wish there had been more books showing development of assembly language games. I know there is the Practical Machine Code book, which is ok too.
