Beginner Question: Which Pixel Art Program do I use?

Post by PaultheRoman » Thu Feb 21, 2019 8:25 pm

I'm new to the scene, and I was wondering two things:
1. Which program should I use to make pixel art for the Spectrum on Windows 10?
2. Which program should I use to make pixel art for the Spectrum within the Spectrum?

Hi, as in your other question, both based on my personal experience:

1. ZX-Paintbrush
2. Melbourne Draw

Other folks could suggest you Art Studio as 2., but since I did not have it back in the day I don't know how it's like.

ZX-Paintbrush is easy to use and comes with an astounding number of features. Graphics, frontends, menus, loading screens etc. for all of my games were developed by using it.

Also remember that while working on PC you don't have to use graphic editor created specifically for Zx Spectrum.

You can use anything - Photoshop, GIMP, Paint Shop Pro... You save your picture as standard image (.gif, .png) and later you convert it to Spectrum format with one of the existing tools. Sevenup is widely used for such work.

Just remember to use Spectrum pallette when creating you graphics and obey Zx Spectrum attribute limitations. You can draw anything in modern editors but Spectrum is Spectrum and it won't display anything against the rules.

Working with grid 8x8 pixels helps a lot to work with attributes.

I use GIMP primarily, check and tweak animations in Aseprite and import to ZX-Paintbrush for use on Speccy.
