Slipknot on a spectrum 128k
Slipknot on a spectrum 128k
would it be possible to get Duality or Psychosocial to play on the spectrum 128k?

Re: Slipknot on a spectrum 128k
I'd love to hear someone attempt it in Beepola or AY! Big bassy guitars are something we hear less often on 8 bit.

Well, there are some nice digital trackers for the Speccy, I wonder if if this can be done using samples.
Re: Slipknot on a spectrum 128k
I would say that unfortunately Spectrum is not very good at playing hard rock/heavy metal style music.
I believe beeper would perform better in such cases than AY chip. AY has these soft, synthetic sound which cannot mimic electric guitars very well.
Of course you have two choices - you can do "normal" music or sampled music. With sampled music you are able to play practically anything quite close to the original but generally it takes a lot of memory and uses 100% of CPU times, unless you do some very clever and advanced tricks. It's a trade-off.

Slightly offtopic - check this this recent Spectrum demo, the music may really surprise you. As I understand it's AY mixing samples with regular "instruments" plus some very tricky timing which enables some animation on the screen meanwhile.

It's a great demo, interestingly enough I've been trying to track down Poke, whose system they have used / adapted. Poke originally released DigiSID back in 2003. I'd love to get something like this working on the Next with all that lovely space available.Ralf wrote: ↑Tue May 22, 2018 9:19 pm Slightly offtopic - check this this recent Spectrum demo, the music may really surprise you. Here’s the link to the DigiSID demo. It’s a TR-DOS Beta Disk image in the SCL format, but the demo itself doesn’t require any special hardware other than the stock AY chip on any 128K machine.
Here’s another interesting demo that produces non-typical sounds on the AY chip.

R-Tape - I've got a WIP that might fit your bill. No guarantees it'll be ready by Friday though
And of course, if a single AY chip isn't powerful or bassy enough, then why not just add another AY chip?

Re: Slipknot on a spectrum 128k
Thanks
Although we know that Poke was the one who pioneered Atari tricks on Speccy, I have to stress that no single bit of his routines or any other tools or knowledge was used to make this demo. In fact, I don't even know how exactly he does this stuff but AFAIK our approach is quite different.
This guy just quietly "borrowed" a bunch of .tap files with Atari music converted by me that I accidentally made public. Pretty lame.
The replayer code is the same as that used in Atarin.
Re: Slipknot on a spectrum 128k
My apologies there, I assumed because in demo poke mentioned that there was some collaboration.kowalski_tl wrote: ↑Mon Aug 27, 2018 12:50 pm Thanks

I've been digging around a bit more into these methods that attempt to break out of the boring old square tones. Very interesting!

Kowalski I have been listening to the Atari compilation all night, it really is amazing to hear high quality PWM just like the Atari ST.
Please let me know how this is done, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for!
Thanks.
