Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
LOL yeah, losing her smile, losing her colour, yet other parts of her increase in size.
Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
One of 'em looks like it is falling off. Ouch!
I code to live (Job) and I live to code (Retro). One of them has to give!
Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Oh my, the Spectrum version is really ugly. Which is the shame as Amstrad version is really nice.
Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Hmm, I think this can be a good title for a terror-mystery text adventure.
Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Here's a 30 minute conversion of the Arcade image, with minor retouching:
Looks much better than the original I think!
Sure, modern tools help a lot, but there's no reason for bad looking Spectrum graphics.

Wait until you see "Samantha Fox Strip Poker". Some of her poses make her look like an actual chimpanzee.
Then again I was photographed at a mid-90s demoparty and the scroller cruelly described me as "hydrochloric acid ate my face". (Who can name the demo? lol)
Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Nice... Definitely much better, but it has the grainy, speckly look of "16-bit downconversion". Not as good as something drawn for the particular platform. (Now I'm thinking of that hellishly ponderous rotating Earth globe in "Nigel Mansell"... which actually slowed down the music)

Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Inspired by 4thRock's awesome attempt, I couldn't resist having a go at this myself! Ended up putting in a bit of time and changing the entire screen, drawing the SEGA logo etc! What can I say, I'm a sucker for a pretty lady!
Here's a comparison of our three Speccy versions
I guess mine's a bit more cartoony, but I think all 3 styles are cool. (I work in Photoshop so there may be minor colour errors.)

Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Some of the other Compass screen and box art has elements inspired by, or taken, from elsewhere including Fighting Fantasy and a fair amount from the Lord of the Rings movie. The working title for The Blood of Bogmole was The Blood of Smeagol.
Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
Wow, you're right. I think that red inlay is made up of straight photocopies from Fighting Fantasy.
There's another Bakshi-derived loading screen, too:
Demon from the Darkside loading screen (1986)
Black Rider from Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings (1978)

Hobble Hunter loading screen
Weirdly I think this comes from an image of Sam Gamgee related to this one:

See also Shadows from the Past, I think.

Crack Down (1990) cover
Still of the devil in The Devil Rides Out (1968)
I think the two men in the middle are copied from stills of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando (1985). The right-hand figure seems to be copied from this image (or a very similar one):
I haven't found the exact frame for the left-hand one, but this shows Schwarzenegger posing with the same gun:
(Note the cover seems to have flipped the image left-to-right, as the figure is firing left-handed.)
The small figure in the bottom left seems to have been copied from the front stormtrooper in this image from Star Wars (1977):

Great spots. Weirdly I was looking at the first one the other day and thought it looked like a copy, but couldn't place it.StooB wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 8:17 am Silversoft covers taking a little inspiration from Peter Elson.

Re: Game art copied from elsewhere
To return to the subject of the Firebird logo's typeface, it seems someone has made a typeface from it, called Hirosh:
https://www.dafont.com/hirosh.font
I'm fairly confident the typeface is derived from the logo, not the other way round, given that the font includes the dots that were not apparently part of the logo's original inspiration.

Geesh, just a little! You could not get away with something like that these days!StooB wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 8:17 am Silversoft covers taking a little inspiration from Peter Elson.
Not intended to be tacky, only to add beauty by defining the body's centre line. I would have preferred a much softer colour but our good friend Mr Attribute Clash forced me to use magenta.
