Good fire animations

Post by Ralf »

We had a thread about good rocks graphics ( viewtopic.php?f=7&t=736 ), why not make it about good fire graphics and good fire animations ?

I'm not asking totally out of boredom ;) actually I would like to see it done properly to have start point and inspiration for my games graphics.

I remember Dizzy games have all these torches and generally a lot of fire in them:

Any other good stuff?

There should be loads but I'm struggling to find them.

The burning chalices in Sword of IANNA are quite good (~4.50 in the RZX) but you're probably thinking of something more full bodied. Then I remembered the fireplace in Brunilda and was astonished to (re)discover that it was a pasable FLASH animation!

I'm rather pleased with my random frame fire animations in El Stompo, but you probably don't fancy dipping your toe into bicolour.

If we're blowing our own trumpets ;), I was quite pleased with the colour-clash-free wall torches in Balachor's Revenge. I doubt anyone ever notices them, though, as they only appear in the frantic last stage when you are unlikely to be admiring the scenery :(.

It's been a while so the following may be incorrect:

-Phantomas?
-Myth?
-Abu Simbel Profanation?

I know there are dozens of them, but none come to mind. This reminds me of when I asked (years ago) which games had good castle-like graphics.

I thought the same so I've checked their maps to confirm and there's no fire animations, even in Phantomas 2 that takes place in Dracula's castle. Myth do have.

In Spirits (Topo Soft) there are plenty of torches and candles:

But it's hard to think about any other games with them.

Yes, a lot of torches and candles in Spirits, and even some bigger fire under a cauldron. But the quality is nothing special.

And now I remember a "sea of fire" in Savage:

it would be nice to see the animation frames, somewhere, in a PNG (all frames) or animated GIF.

Some of the references, we can only see a blurry video.
Games like "Balachor's Revenge", and others, which are hard to get to the place where the animation is, can't be seen with the attention they deserve.

Now I remember a fire animation in Phantomas 2 (Vampyre), near the start, you have to pass over a table with two candles and wait when they have no fire. It's a small animation, though.

I did a fire animation for Apulija-13. I reworked it several times but in the end I was pleased enough with the result.

Just discovered that in Las Tres Luces de Glaurung by Erbe, there's a good fire animation in the first screen to the right of the start.

Does the fire in Sabre Wulf when you hang around too long on one screen count? I guess it does, but is it good?

I like that effect a lot. The ones with the shades on look a bit erratic though.
